I am proud of the respect and honour that PM Modi and Amit Shah bestowed upon my late grandfather, she said. The announcement&nbsp;was made on Tuesday by the Central government, led by the BJP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Caste is predicted to play a significant part in the upcoming general elections, therefore this move is perceived as the BJP reaching out ahead of them. In charge of communications, Congress national secretary Jairam Ramesh claimed that the choice was a reflection of the Modi government&#8217;s desperation and hypocrisy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thakur was born in 1924 in the Samastipur village of Pitaunjhia, which is now known as Karpoori Gram. He was a member of the Nai, or barber, caste, which made up 1.6% of the state&#8217;s population in the 1970s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the next 33&nbsp;years, he never lost after winning his first election to the state assembly in 1952 from the Tajpur seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Karpoori Thakur led the Socialist Party as chief minister of Bihar for roughly six months in 1970.
