The Karnataka government introduced standardised fares for taxi services in the state, including online taxi services like Ola and Uber. The motive of bringing standardised fares, for all taxi services, is to address the complaints of overcharging and form a uniform fare system.

As per the revised fare structure announced by the government, the taxi vehicles will be categorised into three classes based on the cost of the vehicle.

The minimum fare for cab rides has been set according to the cost of the vehicle. For vehicles costing up to 10 lakh, the minimum fare is Rs 100 for a distance of up to 4 km, with an additional charge of Rs 24 for every km thereafter.

For vehicles costing between 10 lakh and 15 lakh, the minimum fare for the first 4 km is Rs 115, with an additional charge of Rs 28 for every km thereafter. For vehicles costing above 15 lakh, the minimum fare for the first 4 km will be Rs 130, with an additional charge of Rs 32 for every km thereafter. Cab aggregators are not allowed to charge passengers extra during peak hours, according to the order.

According to reports, L Hemanth Kumar, additional commissioner for transport and secretary of the State Transport Authority said earlier, that there were separate fares for app-based and city taxis. The authority decided to introduce uniform fares for all taxis/cabs. Further, the state removed the non-AC category from the fare structure, as all vehicles now come equipped with AC facilities, he added.

The order specifies that passengers will not be charged for waiting for the first five minutes. After that, they will be charged Rs 1 for every additional minute. Furthermore, app-based aggregators will collect 5% GST, and toll charges may be collected from passengers.

Passengers travelling between 12 am and 6 am will be charged fares that are 10% higher than regular fares. The order emphasizes that fares should not be charged based on time, but instead should be based on the fares fixed by the government. It also states that passengers should not be charged any unauthorized fares.
