Former Prime Minister Imran Khan and former Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi were granted bail by a Pakistani anti-terrorism court in 12 cases including attacks on military installations in May of last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This happened when independent candidates, the majority of whon were supported by Imran Khan, won a majority of seats in the Pakistani elections. In addition, Nawaz Sharif’s party won the most seats in an election tainted by erroneous poll results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A number of Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders are on trial in many other cases related to the chaos that occurred on May 9 and damaged important military installations throughout Pakistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After Imran Khan was taken into custody by the Rangers in Islamabad, protests broke out. The unrest that followed caused damage to over 20 military institutions and public structures, including the Army headquarters in Rawalpindi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There have apparently been assaults on police officers outside of Khan’s Zaman Park home as well as at the Corps Commander Lahore’s house, Askari Tower, and Shadman police station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Days after the violence, hundreds of protestors associated with Khan’s PTI were taken into custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Several cases have been brought against the former captain of the Pakistan cricket team and a number of his party members since he was removed from office as prime minister in April 2022. Khan was ousted as prime minister after he lost a vote of no confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In August last year, Imran Khan received a three-year jail term in the Toshakhana case, which involved the unlawful sale of gifts from the state that he had kept while serving as prime minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Cypher case, in which he was accused of leaking national secrets, led to his detention even though the Islamabad High Court had postponed his sentence. In this case, he was sentenced to ten years in prison.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
