Undeterred by gunfire from the police at the Punjab-Haryana border, protesting farmers are ready to continue their march in towards Delhi after calling for a ceasefire after a turbulent day filled with shootings, water cannons, and tear gas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reverberations of the 2020\u201321 protests continued when thousands of farmers, mostly from Punjab, tried to break through barriers on their way to Delhi and were met with a large police presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Determined to stop them from entering the state, the Haryana Police used a variety of tactics, such as water cannons, concrete barriers, and drones fitted with tear gas canisters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After unsuccessful talks with the Centre, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha are leading the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march. Among their demands are loan forgiveness and a law on MSP for crops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition to multiple layers of barricading, a major deployment of police and paramilitary forces is in place to secure the boundaries of the national capital at Singhu, Tikri, and Ghazipur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Heavy security has been placed over Central Delhi, with anti-riot gear-wearing policemen stationed strategically and concrete and metal barricades controlling access to a number of important roadways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Due to the farmers’ march towards the national capital on Tuesday, the Delhi Metro restricted traveler admission and departure at nine stations by closing some gates for a number of hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After unsuccessful talks with the government, police used tear gas to stop hundreds of farmers demanding minimum crop prices from marching towards the capital, New Delhi. At the Shambhu border in Ambala, some 200 kilometers north of the capital, demonstrators were scattered by thick clouds of tear gas. In addition, tear gas canisters were dropped from the air by police using drones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Punjab state police force has been ordered to remain on duty in the field, making up about 70% of the force, despite the fact that the police are not actively preventing farmers from the state from moving towards Delhi.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
