As protesting farmers have rejected the government’s proposal of a five-year contract to buy maize, cotton, and three types of pulses at the previous minimum support price, the borders surrounding Delhi are expected to witness a clash once again on Wednesday.
Hours before the protesting farmers made their declaration, the MSP proposal was also criticised by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha, an umbrella group of farmer unions that is not involved in the present protests.
The protesting farmers will resume their nonviolent march towards Delhi on Wednesday, according to farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher, who made this announcement during a press conference on Monday at the Shambhu border, which separates Punjab and Haryana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Farmers leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, said in Hindi the grounds behind his rejection of the proposal that they have reviewed the proposal that the government made (on Sunday night). The MSP applying to only two or three crops and leaving the other farmers on their own is incomprehensible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said, the honorable minister said yesterday that an additional Rs 1.5 lakh crore will be burdened if the government guarantees MSP on daals (split pulses). However, according to a research conducted by Prakash Kammardi, the previous chairman of the Agricultural Price Commission, the overall cost for all crops will be Rs 1.75 lakh crore, the farmers leader continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dallewal pointed out that the government spends Rs 1.75 lakh crore on importing palm oil, which he said was bad for people’s health. He suggested the same money could be used to support farmers in growing oilseeds, for which MSP could be proclaimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The farmers leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal also asserted that the government would only provide the support price to farmers who choose to diversify their crop diversification and begin cultivating crops that fall under the MSP program.
