In order to make a decision on the first list of candidates for the Lok Sabha election, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a late-night meeting of the BJP’s top decision-making body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to sources, the party is expected to declare a number of candidates ahead to the election dates, which will put pressure on the Opposition INDIA bloc, which is still working through the seat distribution procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The meeting to discuss the lists created by the Central Election Committee’s more than 550 members included PM Modi, Amit Shah, JP Nadda, Rajnath Singh, and other senior leaders, the sources said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the BJP office, PM Modi met separately with Shah and Nadda, while the other members of the CEC went over lists of potential candidates.
The meeting is taking place at the party headquarters in Delhi past midnight, and senior leaders Devendra Fanavis, Prakash Javadekar, Mansukhbhai Mandaviya, Pushkar Dhami, Pramod Sawant, Bhupendra Yadav, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Keshav Maurya, Yogi Adityanath, and others are in attendance.
The meeting, according to sources, would center on naming candidates for the Lok Sabha seats in various states, including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Telangana, Rajasthan, Goa, and Gujarat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The selection of candidates for Tamil Nadu, Punjab, and Andhra Pradesh has been postponed. According to sources, alliance talks are underway in all three states, Telugu Desam Party and Jana Sena in Andhra Pradesh, AIADMK in Tamil Nadu, and Akali Dal in Punjab.
The BJP hopes to announce candidates for more than 50% of the Lok Sabha seats before March 10th. Shortlists naming the top three contenders for each seat have been created.
During the recent general election in 2019, the BJP announced 164 candidates on March 21, weeks before the elections were declared. The same plan of action was used during 2019 general election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The lists reportedly adhere to a methodology known as the party as a winnability survey, a method for selecting the most qualified candidate for a seat.
