Centre on Wednesday notified the fact check unit under the Press Information Bureau (PIB) of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting as the fact check unit of the central government. The fact-checking unit has been notified under\u00a0the IT Rules of 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the Ministry of Electronic and Information Technology (MeitY), the central government today notified the fact check unit under the PIB of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting as the fact check unit of the central government for the purposes of the said sub-clause, in respect of any business of the central government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Under the new Rules, social media platforms that do not take down fake news notified by the PIB will lose safe harbour from legal liability for such content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The notification comes hours after stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra moved the Supreme Court seeking an interim stay on the Centre\u2019s notification for forming a fact check unit under the 2023 Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Amendment Rules (IT Amendment Rules 2023).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Notably, the Editors Guild of India has also moved SC in the matter and the apex court has agreed to hear the petitions against the setting up of the fact check unit tomorrow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier on March 11, the Bombay High Court rejected Kamra\u2019s interim plea seeking a stay on the setting up of the fact check unit until the Court rules on the legality of the new rule. No grave and irreparable loss would be caused by allowing the setting up of a fact-checking unit under the IT Rules, the Court noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The IT Rules 2023 gives power to the Centre\u2019s MeitY to notify a fact-checking body which is empowered to identify and tag what it considers false or fake online news concerning any activity of the central government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-clause (V) of clause (b) of rule 3 of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, the central government hereby notifies the fact check unit under the PIB of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting as the fact check unit of the central government for the said sub-clause, in respect of any business of the central government, the MeitY notification read.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
