The Election Commission of India issued show cause notices to BJP leader Dilip Ghosh and Congress leader Supriya Shrinate for their derogatory remarks against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Lok Sabha BJP candidate for Mandi and Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut respectively. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Election Commission found the remarks undignified and in a bad taste. The election body asked the leaders to respond to the commission by Friday. In both the notices, the Election Commission stated that the statements made by the leaders are prima facie violative of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) being in force ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to clause (2) of Part I General Conduct of Model Code of Conduct for the Guidance of Political Parties and Candidates, criticism of other political parties, when made, shall be confined to their policies and programme, record and work. It further states that parties and candidates shall refrain from criticism of all aspects of private life, not connected with the public activities of the leaders or workers of other parties. It mentions that criticism of other parties or their workers based on unverified allegations or distortion shall be avoided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Congress leader Supriya Shrinate sparked a major controversy after an objectionable post was made from her Instagram account demeaning Kangana Ranaut. However, the Congress leader later clarified that many people have access to her social media accounts and someone from there made the extremely inappropriate post. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Amid this row, BJP MP Dilip Ghosh triggered another political storm by making objectionable comments against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Dilip Ghosh later apologised for his remarks and mentioned that his party and other people have reservations about his choice of words.
