Among the very first decisions announced by Kamal Nath after taking oath as Madhya Pradesh chief minister was the “70 per cent jobs for locals” that stirred a controversy – and got him trolled.

Nath announced on Monday: “Our schemes of providing incentives of investment will only be imposed after 70 per cent people from MP get employment. People from states like Bihar and UP come here and local people don’t get jobs. I have signed the file for this.”

The Shiv Sena-MNS (Maharashtra Navnirman Sena) brand of criticism of UP-Bihar walas invited widespread criticism, prompting Congress president Rahul Gandhi to say he will speak to Nath about it.

Meanwhile, Nath’s statement put him in an awkward plight. Nath himself was born in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh on 18 November 1946. He completed his Bachelor degree in Law from DAV College, Kanpur of Kanpur University. He is an alumnus of The Doon School, and earned a Bachelor of Commerce from St. Xavier’s College of the University of Calcutta.

Many people dug up his UP origins. Outsiders taking away jobs of locals in Madhya Pradesh? Kamal Nath is right, they said. He has deprived some MP wala of a Lok Sabha seat and berth in council of ministers for years, and has now snatched the chief minister’s post from local boy Jyotiraditya Scindia.
