The Union government today (Wednesday, June 26) appointed senior IPS officer Arvind Kumar as the Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB)<\/a> and Samant Goel as the next chief of India\u2019s external intelligence agency, Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW).<\/p>\n

Both officers are 1984 batch officers of the Indian Police Service (IPS)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Arvind Kumar, from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre replaces Rajiv Jain whose tenure comes to an end on Saturday, June 29. He was the number two in IB heading its Kashmir desk.He is also reported to have headed the agency in Bihar. Before that, he looked after its administration and inquiry branches for long.<\/p>\n

Samant Goel, who is from Punjab cadre, was heading RAW operations and was reportedly instrumental in planning the February 2019 Balakot air strikes<\/a>. He is also reported to have played a key role in planning of the 2016 surgical strikes carried out after the terror attack at Uri.<\/p>\n

Goel had also helped handle the Punjab militancy when it was at its peak in the 1990s and was posted in Dubai and London. “He was posted as in-charge consular in Dubai and also as in London,” a senior officer in the home ministry told NDTV.<\/p>\n

Goel will succeed Anil Dhasmana whose tenure also comes to an end on June 29, the same day as Rajiv Jain.<\/p>\n

The newly appointed heads will take charge on June 30.<\/p>\n
