[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in his constituency Varanasi in the morning today (Saturday, July 6) to launch a membership drive for the BJP.

Following up on his statement earlier in the day, that he will “elaborate on my thoughts on the Budget and India’s growth trajectory in the coming years”, Modi, addressing party workers, slammed those criticising the budget and questioning his government’s aim of making India a $5 trillion economy.

Speaking after launching the membership drive, he said, “What is ‘5 trillion dollar economy’? Can we achieve this? This Budget is for development and poor. Many people have questioned the target but criticism only strengthens my resolve. Woh jo saamne mushkilon ka ambaar hai, uss hi se to mere honsalon ki minar hai.”

He said that New India was on threshold of racing ahead.

Addressing workers, Modi said, “Yesterday, you must have read or seen in newspapers and television about the $5 trillion economy. What does this five trillion dollar economy mean? It is very important for all of you to know what it has to do with the life of an ordinary Indian. Because there are some people who are doubting the potential of Indians, they are saying that it is very difficult for India to achieve these goals.”

He said: “There is a saying in English ‘size of the cake matters’, meaning, the bigger the cake, bigger the slice people will get. That is why we have a goal of a $5 trillion dollar economy. The bigger the economy’s target, the greater the country’s prosperity.”

Modi then referred to his governments schemes for water conservation and supply, infrastructure development, clean and healthy India etc and how these will take India towards the goal of $5trillion economy.

This is his second visit to the temple town in Uttar Pradesh after his party clinched a spectacular win in the national election held in April-May. He last visited Varanasi on May 27 to thank the people of his constituency after he won the national election by a margin of 4.79 lakh votes, increasing his victory margin rise by nearly a lakh votes compared to 2014, when he defeated Aam Aadmi Party’s Arvind Kejriwal by over three lakh votes.

After landing at Varanasi around 10 am, PM Modi inaugurated a statue of former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri at the airport of the temple town. Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik, BJP working president JP Nadda and Union Minister Mahendra Nath Pandey received him.

He launched the membership drive in presence of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and party working president JP Nadda. The membership drive launch coincides with the birth anniversary of the party’s founder, Syama Prasad Mookerjee.

PM Modi paid homage to Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee. He said, “I pay homage to Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjeeji. Today I have got the opportunity to launch a membership campaign from Kashi. It is a coincidence that this building is in the name of Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyayji and the programme is starting from our Kashi. That’s a trinity on which we’re launching a membership campaign.”

For the membership drive, the BJP workers have undertaken massive preparations to add 36 lakh new members in Uttar Pradesh itself. Modi kickstarted the drive by welcoming 11 prominent people from various sections of the society to the BJP.

“Four counters will be set up at the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Trade facilitation centre to welcome new members to the party. Apart from this, a helpline will also be launched on which and people can get membership by calling on this number. The number will be launched post formal inauguration of the drive by PM Modi on 6th July.” a worker said on Friday.

BJP vice-president Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the party has set a target of adding a minimum of 20 per cent more workers during the membership drive, which will end on August 11.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will also participate in the BJP’s membership drive programme in Jaipur, BJP chief and Home Minister Amit Shah in Hyderabad and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari in Nagpur.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
