Teachers of the Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA) have begun an indefinite strike to protest the Principal Association’s (DUPA) decision to not renew the appointments of ad hoc teachers. They protested outside the vice-chancellor’s office today to demand the roll back of the circular that seeks to oust 4,500 teachers from their jobs.\u00a0It has given a 10-hour deadline to the VC to resolve the issue.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/iframe><\/code><\/p>\nOn November 29, DUPA held a meeting where it decided not to confirm the appointments of 4500 ad-hoc teachers and also put their salaries on hold. The DUPA circular follows the\u00a0 circular issued by Vice Chancellor Professor Yogesh Tyagi dated August 29 which mandated the appointment of guest teachers, instead of ad-hoc faculty as has been the norm in the university since 1990s.<\/p>\nThe DUTA has called the strike at a critical juncture when the semester examinations are on. The DUTA has urged all the teachers to boycott exam duties. If the strike continues, thousands of students are going to be affected.<\/p>\nThe teachers body has urged all the teachers to stay away from invigilation, evaluation and other official duties. It has also urged superintendents and Dty. Superintendents for examination to resign. However, it has requested the teachers not to stop students from taking exams.<\/p>\nThe DUTA wrote to the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry on Tuesday requesting them to immediately intervene. It wants the HRD Ministry and UGC to absorb all ad-hoc teachers.<\/p>\n“Ad-hoc teachers are being demoted, their salaries will be halved through an arbitrary letter or “farman” sent to colleges, a letter drafted through undemocratic illegal decision making. Colleges are withholding ad-hoc salary and refusing to release appointment letters for the new semester”, said Monami Basu, a DUTA member.<\/p>\n“The public-funded higher education is going through its worst-ever phase.
