Protesting Jawaharlal Nehru (JNU) students headed towards the Rashtrapati Bhavan were stopped by the Delhi police and lathi-charged near Sarojini Nagar bus depot today. The students were marching to Rashtrapati Bhavan, demanding to meet the President of India, who is also the visitor of the varsity, against the university administration’s hostel fee hike order.<\/p>\n

JNU students’ union President Aishe Ghosh who was addressing the students from the bumper of the police van, was forcibly brought down by the police. She alleged that she received injuries because of the manhandling by the police. Women students have alleged that they were lathi-charged and manhandled by male constables despite the fact that women constables were also present at the scene.<\/p>\n

<\/iframe><\/code><\/p>\nThe police permitted the students to march till Sarojini Nagar bus depot, but resorted to lathi-charge\u00a0when the students tried to cross the Bhikaji Cama Place Metro station, which was cordoned off.<\/p>\nThe Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) had to close the entry and exit points at three stations — Central Secretariat, Lok Kalyan Marg, and Udyog Bhawan — for four hours. Traffic diversions were also put in place at some stretches, including Baba Gangnath Marg.<\/p>\nJNU students have been protesting for over a month against a 300 percent hike in hostel fee.
