At a press meet today, the Vice-Chancellor said the cops didn’t have any permission to enter the campus.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of students had gathered inside the campus to protest against the new citizenship law on Sunday. After locals joined their agitation and protested outside the campus entrance, the police used batons to disperse the crowds.<\/p>\n
According to the police, when the locals took refuge in the campus, they followed them. But the students said the cops barged into the library and washrooms where they teargassed them.<\/p>\n
This was the second time in the last week when police clashed with Jamia students. At least four Delhi Transport Corporation buses were set on fire and hundreds, including police personnel were injured.<\/p>\n
Demanding a high-level inquiry into “police brutality”, the VC said, “Students are scared. We can rebuild the infrastructure, but one cannot compensate for the horror the students went through,” the VC said.<\/p>\n
The VC has already met the top HRD officials and the university will soon file an FIR.<\/p>\n
Dismissing rumours that two students were killed in the incident, she said, “None of our students died. About 200 people were injured of which many were our students.”<\/p>\n
AP Siddiqui, Registrar of Jamia Millia Islamia, while clarifying reports that police entered the mosque at the campus and also sexually assaulted girl students, said, “A lot of rumours are being circulated on social media. We can’t confirm or deny all of them.”<\/p>\n
Responding to Vice Chancellor’s claim that the police entered the campus without permission, DCP Central Delhi and Delhi Police PRO said, “When we started pushing rowdy elements, they went inside. Police also chased them, stones were being pelted at us. We are doing a detailed investigation.” He also refuted the allegations that the police set the buses and properties on fire.”<\/p>\n
