The contract worth $5.43 billion was signed during the visit of The Russian President Vladamir Putin to India last year.<\/p>\n<p>The US under Trump administration have opposed the S-400 deal with Russia and have threatened to impose sanctions on the states that are acquiring weapons and military hardware from Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Countering America&#8217;s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), a federal law in United States \u00a0restricts defence purchases from Russia, Iran and North Korea. India\u2019s $5.43 billion deal with Russia could attract sanctions under this law, and may affect Indo-US ties.<\/p>\n<p>The S-400, an upgraded version of the S-300, had previously only been available to the Russian defence forces. It is manufactured by Almaz-Antey and has been in service in Russia since 2007.<\/p>\n<p>The S-400 missile system has the capacity to destroy aircrafts, cruise and ballistic missiles, including medium-range missiles. It can also be used against ground installations.
