US President Donald Trump has been acquitted by the Senate after the impeachment trial on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. He drew support from fellow Republicans to protect the biggest threat to his presidency.

Trump is only the third US leader ever placed on impeachment trial, but he defeated the effort to expel him from office for having illicitly sought help from Ukraine to bolster his 2020 re-election campaign.

Trump was confronted with strong evidence but Republicans stayed loyal and mustered a majority of votes to clear the president of both charges, by 52 to 48 on abuse of power and 53 to 47 on obstruction of Congress.

“Two-thirds of the senators present not having pronounced him guilty, the Senate adjudges that respondent Donald John Trump, President of the United States, is not guilty as charged,” said Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, who presided over the trial.

One Republican representative Mitt Romney voted alongside Democrats on the first count, saying Trump was “guilty of an appalling abuse of public trust.” He voted not guilty for the second.

The verdict cleared a major hurdle for President Trump to work into his campaign for re-election in November.

“I will be making a public statement tomorrow to discuss our Country’s VICTORY on the Impeachment Hoax!” Donald Trump tweeted.
