US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks for five hours in New Delhi today, said Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla while addressing the media after the meeting on Tuesday.

The talks were primarily focused on five major categories – security, defence, energy, technology and people to people contact, with President Donald Trump assuring India highest consideration for collaboration in defence sector, Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said.

The two countries have also decided to set up working groups on curbing narcotics trafficking and reinvigorating homeland security, he told reporters.

“President Trump has assured highest consideration to India for procurement, technology and joint collaboration in defence sector,” Shringla said.

“On security and defense there was an understanding that we have a strong strategic partnership, that is now referred to as comprehensive strategic global partnership.

“This is a partnership that has encompassed an extraordinary increase in both exchanges as well as cooperation in various security domains,” the foreign secretary added.

Talking about the trade deal, he said,”PM Modi and President Trump said there was useful and comprehensive discussion on trade, there was an appreciation that it increased steadily year on year over the last few years, US exports to India had a fairly dramatic increase.”

“There was a noticeable decline in adverse trade balance from 30 billion dollars a few years ago to 25 billion dollars today. The adverse trade balance is gradually eroding with the greater amount of acquisitions that we are making from US,” he added.
