The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Wednesday announced its decision to lift the ban put on access to social media sites that was in place since August last year.<\/p>\n
In a fresh order issued by Principal Secretary (J&K) Shaleen Kabra, said people would now be allowed unrestricted internet access with 2G speed.<\/p>\n
It is likely that the internet services would also be available on landline connections.<\/p>\n
However, the new order has also put in certain restrictions. For example, people with post-paid SIM will have access to internet services but those with pre-paid SIMs will be able to access internet only after undergoing verification applicable for post-paid SIMs.<\/p>\n
The order will be applicable only till March 17.<\/p>\n
Earlier the Jammu and Kashmir administration had listed close to 1,600 websites (mostly related to education, banking, business and government) that were allowed to be accessed in J&K. The present order sets aside this restriction.<\/p>\n
The Central government had enforced a strict communications blackout in Jammu and Kashmir on August 5 last year, when it scrapped Section 370 of the Constitution, that accorded special status to the state, and bifurcated it into two union territories (Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh).<\/p>\n
The blackout has been criticised by people across India and abroad, including the United Nations and the US government.<\/p>\n
