The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Wednesday told a court that it has found links with Pakistan-based underworld don Dawood Ibrahim in the Kerala gold smuggling case. The investigation agency also said that the terror links need to be further investigated since its intelligence inputs suggest that proceeds from gold smuggling were used for anti-India and terror activities. The top anti-terror agency opposed the bail plea of an accused in the gold smuggling case which has shaken up the state’s politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During interrogation, one of the accused, Ramees, had said he ran a diamond business in Tanzania and had bought gold from the country and sold it in the UAE, the agency said in its counter while challenging Ramees\u2019 bail plea in the special court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The investigation agency further said that data retrieved from the mobile phone of another accused in the same case, Sharafudheen, revealed that he had traveled with Ramees to Africa. The agency quoted a narrative summary from the UN Security Council Sanctions Committee on Ibrahim and a US Department of Treasury\u2019s published fact-sheet on his activities in Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Further agency said that a man called Feroz, who believed to manage Ibrahim’s diamond business in Tanzania was from South India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A probe by detaining all accused in judicial custody till 180 days is absolutely necessary in this case which has transnational ramifications, the agency further told the court. The agency also said that links to the diplomatic channels are required to be further examined by keeping the accused in its custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In November 2019, Ramees was arrested by Customs at the Cochin International Airport. A case was registered against him for importing firearms without a valid license. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The sensational Kerala gold smuggling case involves the smuggling of nearly 30 kg gold allegedly via diplomatic channels in July. The gold was seized by the agencies at the Thiruvananthapuram airport from diplomatic baggage which was meant to be delivered to the UAE consulate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
