Artist sells invisible sculpture for over Rs 13 lakh; also gives instruction on how to display

Can you believe an artist from Italy has sold a sculpture that doesn’t really exist for 15,000 Euros? Yes, you read that right! A 67-year-old artist created an invisible sculpture titled Io Sono (meaning “I Am”) and sold the immaterial piece at an Art-Rite auction house for over Rs 13 lakh. The sculpture was set to be auctioned for 6k to 9k Euros but ended up fetching 15,000 Euros.

Since there is no physical representation of the sculpture, the new buyer has instead received a payment receipt to ensure the authenticity of the purchase.

According to the artist, the sculpture lived in its emptiness despite the fact that it lacked any physical form. When presenting his idea to the buyers, Garau stated that he had sold a vacuum. According to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, which states that “nothing has a weight,” a vacuum is nothing more than a speed full of energy.

The only tangible proof that the sculpture exists is the new owner’s certificate of authenticity, which draws similarities with NFT art. The sculpture “I Am” is an immaterial sculpture that exists only in the creator’s thoughts and does not exist in physical form.

The artist also gave instructions on how to display the sculpture. He said that the sculpture is to be displayed in a space with five by five dimensions and no obstructions inside a “private” house.

The artist went on to say that by ‘exhibiting’ an invisible artefact in a specific place, he was actually attempting to focus the viewers’ thoughts and perceptions on that empty space. As a result, the sculpture will take on a variety of forms and colours.

The artist also related his work to the concept of ‘God,’ who is similarly formless yet is thought to exist in the form that we view them in. “After all, don’t we shape a God we’ve never seen?” the artist questioned reporters.

According to the artist’s interview on the Art-Rite auction website, the other invisible sculpture created by him is ‘Buddha in contemplation’, placed in Piazza Della Scala, in Milan.
