Shani Trayodashi: Significance

According to legends, devotees who fast on this day are said to receive special blessings such as a healthy, affluent, and prosperous life. They are also purified of their past and present misdeeds. On this day, Lord Shiva killed Asuras and Devas who requested help during the Pradosh Kaal. He was there, accompanied by his sacred bull Nandi. As a result, the trayodashi tithi is now associated with Lord Shiva and Nandi’s worship.

Shani Trayodashi: Puja Vidhi

There are two different ways to do puja on Pradosh Vrat. The first way is for devotees to fast for 24 hours a day. They also stay awake during the night. The second way is fasting from sunrise to sunset. The fast is broken after worshipping Lord Shiva in the evening.

Prayers and pujas are done during twilight, which is the hour shortly before dawn and sunset.

  • Before doing puja, take a bath and put on clean clothes.
  • Fill an earthen pot or Kalash with flowers and gangajal.
  • Present Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati with gangajal.
  • Present Shivlinga with milk, honey, ghee, curd, and belpatra.
  • Chant Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra 108 times after reading Pradhosh vrat Katha.
  • Perform aarti at the end of your puja.

Shani Trayodashi: Katha

In ancient times, there was a man named Seth. There was every kind of comfort in Sethji’s house, but Seth and Sethani were always unhappy due to the absence of children. After much deliberation, Sethji handed over his work to the servants and himself went on a pilgrimage with Sethani. On coming out of his city, he found a sage who was sitting in meditation. Sethji thought why not take the blessings of the sage and travel further. Seth and Sethani sat next to the monk.

When the monk opened his eyes, he came to know that Seth and Sethani have been waiting for blessings for a long time. The monk told Seth and Sethani that I know your sorrow. If you observe Shani Pradosh fast, you will get child happiness.

The monk also told the method of Pradosh fast to Seth-Sethani and asked to recite the following worship of Lord Shiva while fasting.

Taking the blessings of both the sages, they left for the pilgrimage. After returning from the pilgrimage, Seth and Sethani performed Shani Pradosh Vrat together, which led to the birth of a beautiful son in their home and their life filled with happiness.
