Google Doodle celebrates 60th birthday of Indian actress Sridevi

Today’s Google Doodle commemorates the 60th birthday of Indian actress Sridevi, as portrayed by guest artist Bhumika Mukherjee from Mumbai. With a prolific career spanning almost four decades, Sridevi illuminated the realm of Bollywood’s grand dramas and comedies, often standing out in an arena traditionally dominated by male counterparts.

Born on this day in 1963 in what is now Tamil Nadu, India, Sridevi’s passion for cinema was ignited during her childhood, leading her to step into acting at the tender age of four with the Tamil film Kandhan Karunai. Mastering multiple South Indian languages, she was able to break into diverse sectors of India’s film industry, gracing Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam movies.

Her moment of national acclaim arrived in 1976, playing the central role in K. Balachander’s Moondru Mudichu. The movie’s triumph propelled her, along with her co-stars, into the limelight, paving the way for a series of blockbusters like Guru and Sankarlal. Revered as the shining star of Tamil cinema, Sridevi’s magnetic on-screen presence beckoned attention from Hindi-speaking film producers as well.

After her breakout role in the action-comedy Himmatwala, Sridevi emerged as a symbol of national pride and a box-office magnet in Bollywood. Throughout the subsequent decade, she graced hits such as the poignant romance Sadma and the uproarious comedy ChaalBaaz. An exceptional feat was her ability to headline major hits without a male co-star, a rarity in an industry historically skewed towards male dominance.

Taking a hiatus in the early 2000s, Sridevi later returned to the spotlight through television shows like Malini and Kaboom. She further contributed by joining the board of directors of the Asian Academy of Film & Television. Her triumphant re-entry into Bollywood came with English Vinglish in 2012, marking her triumphant resurgence as a leading lady after her extended break. Recognizing her contributions, the Indian government bestowed upon her the Padma Shri honour. In 2017, Sridevi showcased her exceptional acting prowess in the crime thriller Mom, where her portrayal of a fiercely protective mother earned her the National Film Award for Best Actress.
