IPL 2024: Lucknow Super Giants beat Royal Challengers Bengaluru by 28 runs

A scorching spell from Mayank Yadav as well as a swashbuckling innings from Quinten de Kock ensured that LSG got the better of RCB at Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru

Lucknow Super Giants registered their second win of the IPL 2024 season with a 28 run win over the Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru on Tuesday. LSG put a total of 181/5 thanks to Quinton de Kock’s 81 and Nicholas Pooran’s unbeaten 40 run knock, before youngster Mayank Yadav’s 3 wicket haul helped restrict RCB out for 153 in 19.4 overs.

But in reality, RCB’s chase never really took off due to their own mistakes and the excellence of Lucknow bowlers. Lucknow opened the bowling with 2 spinners: Krunal Pandya and Manimaran Siddharth and it did surprise Faf du Plessis (19 off 13 balls) and Virat Kohli (22 off 16 balls). But the introduction of pacer Naveen-ul-Haq saw Kohli increase the run rate as he hit the pacer for a 6 over the bowler’s head.

The left arm spinner Siddharth soon fetched the massive wicket of in-form Kohli as the latter’s attempt to go inside out led to a simple catch to Devdutt Padikkal at backward point. RCB went down from that point losing its captain du Plessis, to a mindless run out. Glen Maxwell and Cameron Green and found themselves at 58 for 4 in the 8th over.

This was the period when Mayank cranked up the pace in his 3-over spell. Maxwell tried to pull a 151kmph delivery from Mayank, but the high pace meant that the Aussie could not time his pull, resulting in a simple catch to Pooran at short mid-wicket. Green was beaten by Mayank’s raw pace as the delivery straightened a bit after pitching on the good length to rattle his off-stump.

The right arm pacer dismissed Rajat Patidar (27) which further reduced RCB to 103 for 6, as the home side continued to sink. Earlier De Kock manifested his exceptional hitting skills with a 50 but Lucknow Super Giants could not progress beyond a par score.

CSK official reveals MS Dhoni’s plan on retirement

CSK was eliminated from IPL 2024 after a defeat by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in their final league match on Saturday.

The former captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), MS Dhoni, hasn’t yet announced his retirement plan or whether he plans to continue his career in the IPL, but a CSK official has revealed a message Dhoni gave to the management.

CSK was eliminated from IPL 2024 after a defeat by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in their final league match on Saturday. Both teams had 14 points each, but due to a higher net-run rate, RCB led by Faf du Plessis qualified for the playoffs. CSK fans were sad not only about the defeat of their team but also about the fact that they might see MS Dhoni for the last time in the IPL. However, a CSK official has revealed that he hasn’t commented on his potential retirement.

The unnamed CSK official revealed that Dhoni has requested that the team management hold off on any decisions regarding his retirement for a few months. He said that Dhoni himself hasn’t reached a conclusion and might be considering another season.

The official also mentioned that Dhoni felt comfortable with his running between the wickets during the IPL, a key concern for some fans regarding his age. Additionally, the introduction of the impact player rule in IPL 2024 might influence Dhoni’s decision. This rule allows teams to bring in a substitute player during the second strategic break, potentially offering Dhoni a more specific role within the team that is less physically demanding.

With Dhoni maintaining his silence and the possibility of the ‘Impact Player’ rule working in his favour, CSK fans might not have seen the last of their beloved captain just yet. The official said that the management would wait for Dhoni’s message on the topic and added that MS Dhoni has always had the best interests of the team in mind.
