KKR vs RR preview: Both sides need a victory to revive their IPL campaign

KKR vs RR preview

The Rajasthan Royals will take on the Kolkata Knight Riders at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Saturday. Nothing less than a win will help them to revive their campaign in this season of the IPL.

With just a single win from four matches, Royals have been one of the most inconsistent team in this season of the IPL. Royals have suffered major injury blows as the 2008 champions are without the likes of Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer and Liam Livingstone for the rest of the season.

After losing to RCB by a massive 10 wickets, Sanju Samson will be pleased about his middle-order finding some form. However, some disappointing bowling and top-order action may force Royals to make some changes to their XI for this game.

Two-time champions Kolkata are heading into the clash after nearly staging a memorable win over Chennai Super Kings in the high-scoring thriller at the Wankhede. Pat Cummins and Andre Russell showcased their batting exploits in KKR’s 18-run defeat at the hands of MS Dhoni-led CSK. The KKR think tank will expect a better performance from skipper Morgan and opener Shubman Gill against the Royals at the batting-friendly strip of the Wankhede.

Both the Knight Riders and the Royals have plenty of cream in the middle but their top orders are squishy at best. After their designated opener Ben Stokes was sidelined from the tournament, the Royals bumped Jos Buttler up to the top but he has been dismissed twice in three innings inside the powerplay. His opening partner Manan Vohra hasn’t lasted beyond the fourth over in four innings.

In the IPL 2021, no team has lost more wickets in the first six overs than the Royals (10) and their powerplay run rate of 6.75 is also the worst among all teams in the league.

The Knight Riders haven’t been too flashy in their powerplay either, losing three wickets fewer than the Royals during this phase. While Nitish Rana bounced back from Covid-19 to start the tournament strongly, Shubman Gill continues to lack enough punch in the powerplay. In their last game, even an Andre Russell-led comeback couldn’t save them against the Chennai Super Kings.

With both sides languishing in the bottom half of the points table, they can’t afford another meltdown at the top, especially on one of the better batting pitches in the IPL.

India stresses mutual respect in ties with Italy after Congress’ Meloni remark

India stressed mutual respect and understanding in its ties with Italy after Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, made remarks involving Giorgia Meloni.

India underlined the importance of maintaining mutual respect and understanding in its relationship with Italy, a day after Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s handling of foreign policy.

The Ministry of External Affairs said India and Italy share strong bilateral ties and expressed its commitment to further strengthening the relationship.

“We share deep and strong ties with Italy, and we are committed to further strengthening this relationship,” the MEA said. It added that friendship and bilateral relations between countries should be maintained within a framework of mutual respect and understanding.

The statement came after a political controversy over remarks made at a Congress event in Delhi.

Rahul Gandhi’s mock hug draws BJP criticism

At the Congress event, Rahul Gandhi greeted party leader Sandeep Dikshit with a mock hug. Gandhi had earlier criticised the Prime Minister’s approach to diplomacy, suggesting that it was being reduced to symbolic gestures such as hugging foreign leaders.

Dikshit then brought Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni into the exchange with a remark, following which Rahul Gandhi played along.

The episode drew sharp criticism from BJP leaders, who accused the Congress leader of using inappropriate language against the Prime Minister and lowering the dignity associated with the office of the Leader of Opposition.

Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi questioned Rahul Gandhi’s conduct and said India required mature leadership. He also criticised remarks in which Gandhi had referred to the government as “jokers and clowns”.

BJP leaders target Rahul Gandhi

Union Minister Giriraj Singh also attacked Rahul Gandhi, describing him as “mentally frustrated” and questioning his conduct.

BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj said Rahul Gandhi’s language was inconsistent with the dignity expected from the Leader of Opposition.

BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla also criticised the Congress leader, saying that while disagreement with Prime Minister Modi was legitimate, bringing a foreign woman leader into what he described as a crude joke was neither appropriate nor statesmanlike.

The MEA’s statement, meanwhile, focused on India’s bilateral relationship with Italy and reiterated that mutual respect and understanding remain important to maintaining ties between the two countries.
