avjot Singh Sidhu meets Priyanka Gandhi

The Punjab Congress imbroglio looked set for a different ending with enfant terrible Navjot Singh Sidhu meeting Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in New Delhi on Wednesday. Sidhu met Vadra despite former Congress president rahul Gandhi denying any meeting was scheduled with Sidhu who is rattling the state unit ahead of Assembly elections in the state.

Reports suggest that Sidhu is believed to have discussed his role in the revamp in the Punjab Congress. Sources close to Sidhu said that he had met Priyanka Gandhi for three hours.

Sidhu tweeted his picture with Priyanka with a caption had a long meeting with Priyanka Gandhi.

Sidhu’s meeting with Priyanka Gandhi came a day after Rahul Gandhi denied meeting with the Punjab leader. There is no meeting, Rahul Gandhi told the reporters while leaving his Tughlaq Lane residence on Tuesday.

Sidhu’s team had on Monday told the media that they would be meeting Rahul and Priyanka on Tuesday. He had left his Patiala residence on Tuesday morning but no meeting took place the entire day. Rahul told the media that there was no meeting with Sidhu.

Sidhu’s meeting with Gandhis is considered significant in Congress circles as the party high command is working on sorting a crisis in the state unit of the party. The meeting is being believed to have a bearing on his fate in the Congress.

Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi have been making efforts to bring all Congress leaders, including Sidhu, on a common platform ahead of the next year’s Punjab Assembly Elections.

Rahul has met ministers, MPs, and MLAs – such as Balbir Singh Sidhu, Brahm Mohindra, Vijay Inder Singla, Shamsher Singh Dullo, Lakhvir Singh Lakha – over the past few days amid the ongoing infighting in Punjab Congress.

He has also met Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar and Rajya Sabha MP and former Punjab Congress chief Partap Singh Bajwa.

Navjot Singh Sidhu who had resigned from the Punjab cabinet after he was divested of the local bodies portfolio in 2019, attacked the Punjab CM over the alleged delay in justice in the 2015 incidents of sacrilege and subsequent police firing.

To this, Amarinder Singh had hit back at Sidhu and described the latter’s outbursts as total indiscipline.

Earlier this month, Navjot Singh Sidhu had appeared before a three-member panel set up by Congress to resolve the infighting within the party’s state unit while Amarinder Singh had appeared on June 22 in Delhi.

India stresses mutual respect in ties with Italy after Congress’ Meloni remark

India stressed mutual respect and understanding in its ties with Italy after Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, made remarks involving Giorgia Meloni.

India underlined the importance of maintaining mutual respect and understanding in its relationship with Italy, a day after Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s handling of foreign policy.

The Ministry of External Affairs said India and Italy share strong bilateral ties and expressed its commitment to further strengthening the relationship.

“We share deep and strong ties with Italy, and we are committed to further strengthening this relationship,” the MEA said. It added that friendship and bilateral relations between countries should be maintained within a framework of mutual respect and understanding.

The statement came after a political controversy over remarks made at a Congress event in Delhi.

Rahul Gandhi’s mock hug draws BJP criticism

At the Congress event, Rahul Gandhi greeted party leader Sandeep Dikshit with a mock hug. Gandhi had earlier criticised the Prime Minister’s approach to diplomacy, suggesting that it was being reduced to symbolic gestures such as hugging foreign leaders.

Dikshit then brought Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni into the exchange with a remark, following which Rahul Gandhi played along.

The episode drew sharp criticism from BJP leaders, who accused the Congress leader of using inappropriate language against the Prime Minister and lowering the dignity associated with the office of the Leader of Opposition.

Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi questioned Rahul Gandhi’s conduct and said India required mature leadership. He also criticised remarks in which Gandhi had referred to the government as “jokers and clowns”.

BJP leaders target Rahul Gandhi

Union Minister Giriraj Singh also attacked Rahul Gandhi, describing him as “mentally frustrated” and questioning his conduct.

BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj said Rahul Gandhi’s language was inconsistent with the dignity expected from the Leader of Opposition.

BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla also criticised the Congress leader, saying that while disagreement with Prime Minister Modi was legitimate, bringing a foreign woman leader into what he described as a crude joke was neither appropriate nor statesmanlike.

The MEA’s statement, meanwhile, focused on India’s bilateral relationship with Italy and reiterated that mutual respect and understanding remain important to maintaining ties between the two countries.
