Australian Test captain Tim Paine has resigned from his post after being involved in a sexting scandal. Paine stepped down from the role of captaincy ahead of the much anticipated the Ashes against England. He was being investigated by Cricket Australia over sending an explicit image of himself along with some lewd messages.

Paine was given the captaincy role following the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa in 2018, when regular captain Steve Smith, David Warner and Joe Burns were banned for a year from playing international cricket.

In a statement released by Tim Paine, he said that he will quit the captaincy role, effective immediately. Responding to that, Cricket Australia chairman Richard Freudenstein said, Tim felt it was in the best interests of his family and the Australian cricket to take the decision to step down as captain that the board has accepted Tim’s decision and will now work on the process of identifying and appointing a new captain ahead of the Ashes.

Tim in his statement said that the incident took place nearly four years ago when he was involved in a text exchange with a then-colleague. Paine also said that he fully and openly participated in the investigation.

Paine further said that he spoke to his wife and family at the time and is enormously grateful for their forgiveness and support. He also said that he is sorry for any damage that this does to the reputation of sport and Australian cricket, that it is best for him to step down from the captaincy.

I’m sorry for any damage that this does to the reputation of our sport and I believe that it is the right decision for me to stand down as captain, effective immediately. I do not want this to become an unwelcome disruption to the team ahead of what is a huge Ashes series,” added Tim Paine.

After the resignation of Tim Paine, Cricket Australia is yet to announce the name of their captain for the Ashes, but as per speculations, pace bowler Pat Cummins is likely to become the new captain of the Australian team.
