Paralympic gold medallist Jhajharia, ex-Indian hockey captain Sardar Singh recommended for Khel Ratna

Devendra Jhajharia

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Adding another first to his credit, javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia set to be the only paralympic athlete yet to be awarded the country’s highest sporting honour, awards selection committee also names 17 sportspersons for Arjuna Award, including cricketers Cheteshwar Pujara and Harmanpreet Kaur. But Indian women’s cricket captain Mithali Raj misses out

Two-time paralympic gold medallist Devendra Jhajharia and former Indian hockey captain Sardar Singh have been selected to be awarded the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awards this year. The awards selection committee has recommended both Jhajharia and Sardar to be considered for the award jointly.

If the Union sports ministry accepts the recommendations of the awards selection committee, Jhajharia, a javelin thrower, will become the first paralympian to be conferred with the country’s highest sporting honour. The 36-year-old was also the first Indian to have won two Paralympic gold medals in his sporting discipline.

It is learnt that Jhajharia was the first choice of the awards selection committee headed by Justice (Retd) C K Thakkar although it also picked 31-year-old midfielder Sardar Singh as its second nominee for the top honour.

Sardar, who was previously awarded the Arjuna Award in 2012, is now one of the senior players leading the team. He is one of modern hockey’s finest defensive mid-fielders, leading India to two successive silver medal finishes in the Commonwealth Games.

“My hard work of the last 15-20 years has paid off. It is the biggest of all sporting honours and the credit for that goes to my teammates because without them I couldn’t have achieved what I have,” Sardar said soon after the announcement of the committee’s recommendation.

The final call on whether the duo will jointly receive the sporting honour will now be taken by the Union sports ministry.

17 names recommended for Arjuna Awards

The awards selection committee has also recommended 17 names for the Arjuna award. The list includes men’s cricket team Test regular Cheteshwar Pujara, women’s team World Cup sensation Harmanpreet Kaur, paralympic medallists Mariyappan Thangavelu and Varun Bhati, golfer SSP Chawrasia and hockey player SV Sunil.

However, the list of sporting award nominees is likely to raise some eyebrows as the committee hasn’t recommended Mithali Raj, the Indian women’s cricket team skipper who led her side to the World Cup finals against England recently, for the Khel Ratna.

It is learnt that the BCCI failed to recommend Mithali’s name for the top sporting honour before the April 30 deadline. However, the awards selection committee has in the past broken with convention and recommended names of sportspersons for the honours despite their names not being forwarded by their respective sporting bodies ahead of the deadline – the most recent examples being of medal-winning Olympians PV Sindhu and Sakshi Malik.

Mithali became the highest scorer in the history of Women’s ODI cricket during the World Cup 2017 and also the first Indian batter to strike 1000 runs in a World Cup.

The ace cricketer, however, declined to comment on her name not figuring in the list of award nominees, stating simply that “it is a matter on which the BCCI should have taken a call.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

North Pakistan had issued a terror threat against the West Indies, who are co-hosting the T20 World Cup today, May 6. However, West Indies (CWI) assured the public that every safety measure has been done.

The Caribbean islands have received warnings about possible terror threats coming from North Pakistan, according to a trustworthy source with firsthand knowledge of the circumstances. From June 1 to June 29, the US and the West Indies will host the T20 World Cup.

World Cup matches in Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Guyana, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago will take place in the West Indies. In addition, there are matches in the US cities of Florida, New York, and Texas; however, there appears to be no danger to the games in the US. Barbados will host the final after the two semifinals are held in Trinidad and Guyana.

A source said that they are closely monitoring the situation and maintaining close communication with relevant authorities. Continuous evaluation of security measures is underway to ensure appropriate plans are in place to mitigate any identified risks, they added.

The severity of the problem has increased with the assignment of blame for the danger to IS Khorasan. Trinidad Prime Minister Keith Rowley said that security forces have protocols in place to handle any threats to matches.

As per the report, the Barbados regional security officials are monitoring potential threats to the ICC event in addition to the fact that intelligence of a potential threat to the World Cup has been received through Pro-Islamic State (Daesh) through the media group Nashir Pakistan.

Regarding India, the Men in Blue will face off against Ireland at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York in their season-opening match. On June 9, they will play their next game at the same location against their bitter rivals, Pakistan. The team captained by Rohit Sharma will play the United States in their subsequent game in New York, and then they will play Canada in their last group-stage encounter at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Lauderhill, Florida.

Shreyas Iyer-led Kolkata Knight Riders created history on Sunday during the IPL 2024 match played at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket stadium in Lucknow as it became the first team to reach a score of 200-plus runs in a T20 match played at the 50,000 seater stadium in Lucknow.

Sunil Narine smashed 81 runs off 39 balls and posted a total of 235 runs on the board for the loss of 6 wickets in 20 overs. He thrashed the Lucknow Super Giants bowlers all over the park for fun, hitting 6 fours and 7 sixes. In defense of the huge total, Narine returned figures of 1 for 22 in his 4 overs. Harshit Rana was the pick of the KKR bowlers with figures of 3 for 24 in 3.1 overs as LSG were restricted for 137 runs.

The Lucknow Super Giants innings did not really take off. KL Rahul and Marcus Stoinis forged a 50 run partnership off 33 balls but it was not enough to cause serious problems for Kolkata Knight Riders. Once the partnership was broken, the LSG innings collapsed as the last 9 wickets fell for 67 runs, as the required rate went out of control.

Varun Chakravarthy and Harshit Rana took 3 wickets each. Andre Russell took 2. And Ramandeep took 2 catches; the first catch was one of the most spectacular of the IPL season. Salt played aggressively, hitting 24 runs off the first 9 balls he faced. But he was soon out for 32 runs off 14 deliveries, and from then onwards, it was the Sunil Narine show.

The Kolkata Knight Riders has moved past the Rajasthan Royal to reach the 1st position in the IPL points table. Kolkata Knight Riders has total of 16 points from 11 matches played so far and their net run rate (+1.453) is better than Rajasthan Royals (+0.622).

Chennai Super Kings fans were left shell-shocked as MS Dhoni was clean bowled by Punjab Kings pacer Harshal Patel for a golden duck during their IPL 2024 match.

MS Dhoni was clean bowled for a golden duck by Punjab Kings pacer Harshal Patel today in their IPL 2024 encounter, Chennai Super Kings supporters were left stunned at Dharamsala.

MS Dhoni’s much-hyped entry soon turned into a shocker after Patel’s magical yorker took out Thala’s wicket, and he actually looked clueless about what happened.

Dhoni has only been got out twice in the competition this year, and both of those dismissals occurred against Punjab Kings in the last two games. In the 19th over of the CSK innings, Harshal Patel hit a stunning slower off-cutter that dropped over Dhoni, leaving the seasoned player absolutely out of sorts. As the supporters watched in horror, the ball continued to damage Dhoni’s stumps. Several fans were left in full disbelief when they saw Dhoni dismissed on the first ball, and the dismissal video has since gone viral on social media.

In a post-match presentation, Harshal Patel—who, along with MI bowler Jasprit Bumrah, is the most wicket-taker in the IPL 2024—spoke about MS Dhoni’s wicket and mentioned that, because of his immense respect for the veteran, he didn’t celebrate much after Thala’s wicket.

Coming at the match, CSK scored 167 for the loss of nine wickets with the partnership of Ruturaj Gaikwad’s 32 and top scorer Ravindra Jadeja’s 43. Fast bowler Arshdeep Singh got two wickets for PBKS, while Harshal Patel and Rahul Chahar each claimed three.

In consecutive deliveries, Harshal Patel and spinner Rahul Chahar removed Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shivam Dube, dealing a double blow to the Chennai Super Kings’ batting. Soon after, Moeen Ali and Daryl Mitchell strolled back to the pavilion, and seasoned all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja saved the day for the squad.

However, despite their consecutive wins, PBKS are placed at the 7th position in the points table.
