Odisha Liquor case

A 32-year-old man was detained by the Odisha Police for pouring acid on his 80-year-old grandfather as the man was denied money for buying alcohol by his grandpa. The incident took place in Balagandi village of Kendrapada district of the state.

Mayna Nayak, the grandmother of the accused, filed a complaint at the Kendrapada town police station. In the complaint, she mentioned that her husband, Jaganbandhu Nayak was attacked with acid by their grandson, Niranjan Nayak. The reason told for the acid attack is the denial of money to the accused for buying alcohol by his grandpa.

The IIC of the Kendrapada Town Police Station Tapan Nayak informed victim Jaganbandhu Nayak has been admitted to the district headquarters hospital in Kendrapada.

The Kendrapada police detained the accused under IPC Section 307 (attempted murder) and 326 of IPC Section ( Voluntarily throwing or trying to hurl acid).  The bail request by the accused Niranjan, was denied by the Judge on Wednesday when he was presented to the court. The court directed the police to keep him in prison.

The government of India has made strict rules to prevent incidents of acid attacks in India, Section 326A of the IPC provides for a minimum of 10 years imprisonment and it is extendable to life and with a fine. The fine is not rigidly fixed but it has to be just and reasonable to meet the medical expenses of treatment of the victim.

According to the data of the National Crime Records Bureau(NCRB), there were 102 acid attack cases in 2021, as compared to 105 in 2020 and 150 cases recorded in 2019. Though there seems a fall in such cases, it is almost negligible.

West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh top the list of states with the high number of acid attack cases and these two states recorded the highest number of those cases, accounting for nearly 50% of all cases in the country year on year.

Even though, in 2019, the charge sheeting rate of acid attack cases was 83% but the conviction rate is at 54% only. In 2020, the conviction rate shows remarkable growth and the figures were recorded at 86% and 72% respectively. But, In 2021, conviction rate figures were very disappointing as the figures stood at 89% and 20% respectively.

Actor Imran Khan, nephew of Bollywood star Aamir Khan, has been asked to leave India by the Mumbai Police, days after participating in a protest organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) in Mumbai.

According to the notice, the actor has been given until October 28 to leave the country. The development follows his participation in the demonstration, which brought the actor into the spotlight over his involvement in a political protest.

Imran Khan is believed to hold US citizenship and an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card rather than full Indian citizenship, according to the report.

What led to the notice against Imran Khan?

The notice came days after Imran Khan joined a protest called by the CJP in Mumbai. The group, described as a satirical political organisation, had called for the demonstration.

The actor’s participation was followed by action from the authorities, with the Mumbai Police directing him to leave India by the specified deadline.

The notice does not, by itself, mean that the actor has already left the country or has been deported. October 28 is the deadline mentioned for his departure.

Imran Khan and his citizenship status

Imran Khan is known for his work in Hindi films, including Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na and Delhi Belly. He is also the nephew of actor Aamir Khan.

The report states that Imran Khan is believed to be a US citizen and hold an OCI card. OCI status does not confer Indian citizenship, although it provides eligible foreign citizens of Indian origin with specified privileges under Indian law.

The notice directing the actor to leave India follows his participation in the Mumbai protest. The reported development has brought attention to the intersection of immigration rules and the participation of foreign nationals in political demonstrations.

L Murugan

L Murugan has resigned from his position as Union Minister of State and his Rajya Sabha membership, saying he wants to return to grassroots politics and work towards strengthening the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

Murugan, who held the portfolios of Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, announced his decision in a post on X on Tuesday, October 13. He described his time in the Union government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership as a great honour and said he wanted to devote himself full-time to the party’s work in Tamil Nadu.

L Murugan says he wants to return to grassroots politics

In his post, Murugan expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve in the Union Council of Ministers and highlighted his background as the son of daily-wage labourers.

He said he now wished to return to the grassroots, stand alongside BJP workers and dedicate his time to strengthening the party in Tamil Nadu before the next Lok Sabha elections.

Murugan’s stated objective is to help expand the BJP’s presence in the state and contribute to the party’s performance in the 2029 general elections.

Murugan’s resignation comes amid Cabinet reshuffle speculation

His decision comes amid speculation about a possible reshuffle in the Union government. The discussion gained momentum after several Rajya Sabha MPs and ministers, including Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, were not renominated.

However, the report does not establish that the speculation about a Cabinet reshuffle was the reason for Murugan’s resignation. His publicly stated reason was his desire to return to grassroots work and strengthen the BJP in Tamil Nadu.

Murugan thanks PM Modi for the opportunity to serve

Murugan described serving India and Tamil Nadu under Modi’s leadership as one of the greatest privileges of his life. He also referred to his journey from a family of daily-wage labourers to the Union Council of Ministers.

His announcement places his immediate political focus on Tamil Nadu, with the BJP’s preparations for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections forming a central part of his stated plans.
