Happy Birthday Smriti Mandhana: Achievements that make her a Star of Indian Cricket

India’s prominent cricketer Smriti Mandhana, who debuted internationally at the age of 16 against Bangladesh in 2013, is celebrating her 27th birthday on Tuesday. As the vice-captain prepares for the second ODI against Bangladesh on Wednesday, her dedication and passion for cricket are evident.

Since her debut, Mandhana, an elegant opener, has been consistently performing at a high level. She has represented India in 4 Tests, 78 ODIs, and 119 T20Is. Her breakthrough came in the 2017 ICC World Cup, where she showcased her batting skills. Mandhana played a crucial role in guiding India to the World Cup finals, although they were eventually defeated by England by 9 runs. Over time, Mandhana has become a senior member of the squad and a key pillar of the Indian women’s cricket team.

As India celebrate Smriti Mandhana’s 27th birthday, let’s take a glimpse at her remarkable records and achievements. She became the third-fastest Indian cricketer to reach 1000 runs in T20Is, making her the tenth-fastest overall in women’s cricket. Achieving this milestone in just 49 innings, the Mumbai batter set the record for the fastest T20I fifty by an Indian player in February 2019, achieving it in just 24 balls against New Zealand.

Mandhana also holds the distinction of being the first player in ODI history to score ten consecutive fifty-plus scores while chasing. Her impressive streak began in 2018 when she scored 67 runs off 53 deliveries against Australia Women. She was named the ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year in both 2018 and 2021. Additionally, Mandhana marked her Test debut with a half-century in India’s historic Test victory over England.

In 2021, during a Test match against England, Mandhana and her opening partner Shafali Verma formed a partnership of 167 runs, which is the fourth-highest in the history of women’s Test cricket. She and Australia’s Ellyse Perry are the only players to have won the Rachael Heyhoe-Flint Award twice. Mandhana also received the ICC’s ODI Player of the Year award in 2018, having accumulated the highest points in the calendar year.

CSK official reveals MS Dhoni’s plan on retirement

CSK was eliminated from IPL 2024 after a defeat by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in their final league match on Saturday.

The former captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), MS Dhoni, hasn’t yet announced his retirement plan or whether he plans to continue his career in the IPL, but a CSK official has revealed a message Dhoni gave to the management.

CSK was eliminated from IPL 2024 after a defeat by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in their final league match on Saturday. Both teams had 14 points each, but due to a higher net-run rate, RCB led by Faf du Plessis qualified for the playoffs. CSK fans were sad not only about the defeat of their team but also about the fact that they might see MS Dhoni for the last time in the IPL. However, a CSK official has revealed that he hasn’t commented on his potential retirement.

The unnamed CSK official revealed that Dhoni has requested that the team management hold off on any decisions regarding his retirement for a few months. He said that Dhoni himself hasn’t reached a conclusion and might be considering another season.

The official also mentioned that Dhoni felt comfortable with his running between the wickets during the IPL, a key concern for some fans regarding his age. Additionally, the introduction of the impact player rule in IPL 2024 might influence Dhoni’s decision. This rule allows teams to bring in a substitute player during the second strategic break, potentially offering Dhoni a more specific role within the team that is less physically demanding.

With Dhoni maintaining his silence and the possibility of the ‘Impact Player’ rule working in his favour, CSK fans might not have seen the last of their beloved captain just yet. The official said that the management would wait for Dhoni’s message on the topic and added that MS Dhoni has always had the best interests of the team in mind.

But Yash Dayal bowled two off-pace length deliveries to deny Jadeja and Chennai Super Kings.

This was after he was hit for a massive six on the 1st ball of the last over by Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Yash Dayal then used his back-of-the-hand slower one to have him caught at deep square leg.
