On New Year’s Day, a tragic incident occurred in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district when a boat capsized, resulting in the drowning of a 14-year-old boy. The boat, which was carrying seven teenagers, overturned while they were engaging in social media activities on a lake linked to the Ganga. Officials said that the mishap took place in the Ratiram Purwa area under the Jajmau outpost of Gangaghat Kotwali.

The teenagers were enjoying themselves by taking selfies and making reels when their boat lost stability and tipped over, sending all seven into the water. Local sources indicated that Umar, the only son of Mahatab Alam, was with his friends during the outing. Eyewitnesses and rescue teams quickly responded to the situation, successfully saving six of the teenagers.

According to Jajmau outpost in-charge Rahul Singh, the seven boys involved were Umar (14), Aman (15), Raja (16), Ripu (14), Anshu (15), Keshan (17), and Manish (14). They reportedly stood in the boat to film videos, which caused it to become unbalanced and capsize.

Although six of the boys were rescued by locals and divers, Umar was unfortunately trapped in deeper waters.

Despite efforts to recover him, Umar was declared dead upon his arrival at the hospital.

In a separate incident in 2022, a boat carrying 24 people capsized in the Ganga, leading to the recovery of five children’s bodies the following day. This boat disaster occurred in the evening near the Reotipur police station while the passengers were returning from a weekly market.
