Smith’s fair play act wins praise as Afghanistan sets 274-run target against Australia

Australia’s captain Steve Smith stole the spotlight in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 clash against Afghanistan, not just for his leadership but for an outstanding display of sportsmanship. In a high-pressure encounter at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, Smith’s decision to withdraw a run-out appeal against Afghanistan’s Noor Ahmad has reignited discussions about the “spirit of cricket.”

Smith refuses to appeal in spirit of cricket gesture

The crucial moment occurred at the end of the 47th over of Afghanistan’s innings. Noor Ahmad, after completing a run, absentmindedly stepped out of his crease before wicket keeper Josh Inglis had collected the ball. Spotting the opportunity, Inglis quickly clipped the bails and signaled for a run-out. However, before the appeal could gain traction, Smith intervened and instructed his players not to contest the dismissal. His decision to uphold the spirit of the game was met with widespread applause from commentators, fans, and cricketing experts.

Afghanistan posts competitive 273 despite setbacks

Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, Afghanistan managed to put up a fighting total of 273 runs in their allotted 50 overs. The standout performance came from all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai, who played a brilliant knock of 67 off 63 balls, guiding his team to a respectable score.

Key highlights of Afghanistan’s innings:

  • Sediqullah Atal’s 85 off 95 balls: A crucial knock that provided stability to Afghanistan’s innings.
  • Azmatullah Omarzai’s 67 off 63 balls: Played a vital role in the latter half, ensuring Afghanistan reached a competitive total.
  • Afghanistan all out for 273 in 50 overs: Setting a 274-run target for Australia.
  • Rashid Khan’s 19 off 17 balls: A short but impactful cameo before getting dismissed.
  • Steve Smith’s sportsmanship moment: He refused to appeal for Noor Ahmad’s run-out, earning widespread praise.

Australia’s chase set to be thrilling

With 274 runs to chase, Australia will now look to their strong batting lineup to seal victory. Steve Smith’s leadership will once again be key, both in his decision-making and performance with the bat.

As the game unfolds, all eyes remain on whether Australia can successfully chase down Afghanistan’s competitive total and continue their campaign in the Champions Trophy 2025.
