Life expectancy in Delhi reduced by 10 years, due to air pollution

A report released on Monday by the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago (EPIC) says that air pollution in the national capital in 2016 reduced life expectancy by more than 10 years.

The concentration of fine particulate matter increased by 69 per cent on an average across India, decreasing life expectancy by 4.3 years compared to 2.2 years in 1998. The concentration of fine particulate matter is extremely high in the North Indian state such as Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and the national capital Delhi. This reduces the life expectancy.

Today India is considered as the world’s most polluted country and Delhi falls second among 60 most polluted areas in the nation.

The rapid increase in pollution is harming everyone. Pregnant Women and Children are highly affected with the raise of toxic substances in the air.

A report presented by WHO says that, this pollution is more dangerous than smoke and alcohol. Indians could lived 4.3 years more as compared to other countries of the world if 2016 air quality met the World Health Organization’s (WHO) annual safe air quality guidelines of 10 micrograms per cubic metre.

The report of Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago (EPIC) says that this particulate pollution is reducing 1.8 years of life expectancy worldwide, making the greatest global threat for mankind.

It is said that, as compared to pollution, first-hand cigarette smoke leads to a reduction in global average life expectancy of about 1.6 years.

As per report, air pollution levels in the last week was in the very poor category, and even going to be more polluted in the upcoming days.

PM 2.5 concentration was measured at 124 microgram/m3 in 2016, which is 1.6 times more than 70 microgram/m3 in 1998. Air pollution levels have more than doubled in many districts since 1998. Districts such as Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Bihar shows high raise in PM 2.5 between 2014- 2016.

“These trends need to be examined in detail on whether there was a sudden spike in recent years in some districts. The general air pollution trend is showing an increase. We didn’t have any national scale policy on reducing air pollution in a time bound manner. In Delhi, CNG was introduced for public transport in the late 90s, but with population rise, there must have been a huge rise in anthropogenic sources of pollution,” said Sagnik Dey, associate professor at Centre for Atmospheric Sciences in IIT-Delhi.

Russian President Vladimir Putin to visit India soon, says Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov on Tuesday said that Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit India soon, and the announcement of dates will also be made soon.

He added that specific dates of President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India will soon be announced and Russia will begin preparing for it. He noted that they will work out the precise date of his visit soon. He continued that after two visits of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, they have a visit of President Vladimir Putin to India.

Notably, the Russian President is under an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged war crimes in Ukraine. Earlier in March 2023, nearly a year after the conflict began, the ICC issued arrest warrants against both Putin and Maria Lvova-Belova, Russia’s commissioner for child rights, for the alleged war crimes.

Reportedly, under the Rome Statute, the court’s binding treaty, individuals against whom an ICC warrant has been issued, must be detained if the person visits a country, which is a member state of the ICC. Nonetheless, India has not signed or ratified the Rome Statue. Therefore, the ex-KGB agent cannot be arrested here.

Additionally, India has repeatedly abstained from voting against Moscow on resolutions in the United Nations on the Ukraine war. Also, India has continued to purchase oil from Russia, adding to the annoyance of the United States-led western bloc of nations.

Earlier in October, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Russia’s Kazan for the annual summit of the leaders of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) group of nations. Both the two leaders held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the summit.

During the summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin also discussed India’s economic growth under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He further thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his participation in the three-day summit.

The Russian President said that all the countries talk about the need to ensure high economic growth rates but India has been doing it successfully for several years. He hailed that achieving high economic growth of 7.5 per cent sets an example for other countries.

Uttar Pradesh: Two bikers killed, dozens injured after vehicles pile-up due to low visibility

In an unfortunate incident, two bikers lost their lives, and nearly three dozen people were injured in multiple road accidents early on Tuesday as dense smog blanketed Noida and other parts of western Uttar Pradesh, severely impacting visibility.

Low visibility due to thick fog on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway led to multiple collisions with a broken truck. Multiple car occupants were injured and sent to Saifai Medical College, while one was admitted to Shikohabad Hospital.

Reportedly, on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, a truck collided with another due to low visibility, triggering a chain reaction. Further, a bus travelling from Panipat to Mathura crashed into the stationary trucks, injuring around a dozen passengers who were rushed to the hospital. Police were deployed to the scene to clear the pile-up.

Additionally, in Firozabad, near Agra, nearly six vehicles collided on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway after a pick-up truck broke down near Nasirpur. After the drivers failed to spot the stalled vehicle due to the smog, leading to a pile-up of SUVs and other cars.

Meanwhile, a speeding truck rammed a bike on National Highway-34, killing Mansharam, a Manipuri resident in Bulandshahr. The police have detained the truck driver. Another fatal accident occurred in Badaun, where an unidentified vehicle struck the bike of Santosh Singh, a teacher commuting to his school in Mau, leading to his death. Ten other people sustained injuries in similar incidents in the region.

Notably, these accidents come as North India grapples with hazardous air quality, with pollution levels in the ‘severe plus’ category. The air pollution has created a health emergency in the National Capital Region (NCR), with residents reporting sore throats, headaches, and breathing difficulties. Authorities have also urged people to remain indoors to minimise exposure to the toxic air.

Reportedly, the local police and administrations are on high alert as they manage the fallout from the hazardous conditions, which continue to threaten road safety and public health.

Delhi Pollution: Environment Minister Gopal Rai seeks PM Modi’s intervention for artificial rain in national capital

Amid worsening air quality, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai on Tuesday wrote to the Centre, seeking Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention for artificial rain in the national capital in an effort to combat the worsening air pollution levels in the national capital.

Addressing a press conference, the Environment Minister said that layers of smog have covered North India, and artificial rain is the only solution to get rid of smog. He added that this is a medical emergency. The AAP Minister further stated that PM Modi should intervene, and that it is his moral responsibility to act. He continued that the Centre should take steps to control pollution.

His remarks come as the city remains the most polluted in the country today, with a thick layer of smog blanketing the national capital. Reportedly, the Air Quality Index spiked to an alarming 494 under the ‘severe plus’ category. Despite the implementation of the strictest Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) IV restrictions in the national capital, multiple air monitoring stations touched the 500 mark.

Gopal Rai also slammed Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav, saying the latter has not called a single meeting on artificial rain despite his four letters sent in August, September, October and today. He asserted that PM Modi should ask his Environment Minister to convene a meeting on artificial rain. He added that the Prime Minister should either give a solution or a clear path for artificial rains. If the Centre government cannot act, their minister should resign, he continued.

Speaking on measures taken by the Delhi government, Gopal Rai said that they have banned BS-III petrol four wheelers and BS-IV diesel vehicles. He added that all trucks and diesel buses coming from outside have been banned. He continued that schools have been closed for classes 10 and 12 as well, and timings have been staggered for offices. He further mentioned that they are working to take decisions about work from home.

Environment Minister Gopal Rai’s letter to the Centre seeking a nod for artificial rain came a day after the Supreme Court directed authorities in Delhi NCR not to lift the Stage 4 pollution curbs under GRAP even if the AQI fell below the 450 mark. The top court flagged a delay in the implementation of stricter measures to check air pollution.

Artificial rain involves the dispersion of substances such as silver iodide, potassium iodide, and dry ice into the atmosphere to stimulate the formation of rain or snow. The process typically takes about half an hour to generate rain.

Earlier in November 2023 as well, the Delhi government moved the Supreme Court to discuss the possibility of inducing artificial rain through cloud seeding to bring down the AQI levels in the city.

However, the top court asked the AAP government to instead approach the Centre and seek permission for the implementation.
