Toyota discontinues Urban Cruiser, all set to launch new crossover in 2023

Published

The Japanese car maker Toyota has recently launched one of its feature-loaded hatchbacks Baleno-based new Glanza and the all-new Urban Cruiser Hyryder. After successfully launching these two vehicles, the company has silently discontinued the ongoing mid-size SUV Urban Cruiser, which was based on the Suzuki Vitara Brezza’s platform.

Reports say the decision has been taken after seeing the massive downfall in the sale of the particular vehicle. In fact, the company has witnessed low demand for compact SUVs which was reportedly falling down to zero units in October 2022.

Seeing the sudden change in demand from the customers, the firm also removed the vehicle from its official site. However, the company soon will fill the gap with its new crossover, based on the new Baleno/Glanza hatchback platform in 2023.

The report says that the new crossover is likely to share some of the key features from both Baleno and Glanza. Reports also suggested that the upcoming crossover is likely to provide customers with wider space in the front cabin, more boot space, and higher leg room for the rear passengers. However, the company did not reveal any official details regarding the same as of now.

It’s expected that Suzuki’s 1.0-liter Boosterjet 3-cylinder turbo-petrol engine with mild hybrid technology will be featured in the upcoming Toyota crossover. There are expectations that the engine is likely to produce 100 horsepower and 150 Nm of peak torque. The engine will be offered in both a CVT automatic and a 5-speed manual transmission.

If rumors are to be believed, a 1.2-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine with manual and AMT gearbox options could possibly be used in the crossover in the upper variants.

Meanwhile, In the first quarter of 2023, Maruti Suzuki is likely to launch its all-new crossover, built on the Baleno platform that will go by the name Maruti YTB. The redesigned Baleno Cross will only be available through the NEXA dealership network.

Sitharaman said that adequate funds have been allocated to junk government-owned old vehicles in a bid to reduce pollution.

She added that the government will boost coastal shipping with viable gap funding through PPP mode to promote as energy-efficient and lower-cost mode of transport for both passengers and freight.
