Air India has placed orders for 840 aircraft with Airbus and Boeing, an official of the airline said on Thursday, adding that an option to acquire 370 is also included in the dead.

In a post on LinkedIn, Chief Commercial and Transformation Officer of Air India, Nipun Aggarwal termed it as a “landmark moment” in the country’s aviation history and revealed that the airline has placed an order for 470 aircraft, 250 from Airbus and 220 from Boeing.

Aggarwal said in the post that Air India is “humbled by the excitement” excitement generated across the world by the carrier’s aircraft order which will be one of the largest orders by an airline in the modern aviation history.

The senior official added that the order of 840 aircraft has been a culmination of a fascinating journey that began almost two years ago with the Air India privatisation process. He said that the first A350 plane will be delivered to the airline by the end of 2023.

Giving details about the orders, he said that the Airbus firm order comprises 210 A320/321 Neo/XLR and 40 A350-900/1000 while the Boeing order contains 190 737-Max, 20 787s and 10 777s, adding that Air India has also signed up for long-term maintenance of the engines with CFM International (CFM), Rolls-Royce and GE Aerospace.

Air India, which was acquired by the Tata Group in January 2022, has not placed an aircraft order for the past 17 years. Its last order for 111 planes — 68 from Boeing and 43 from Airbus—was placed in 2005 under government ownership and the deal was worth $10.8 billion.

Aggarwal observed that the order highlights the “vision and aspiration” of Tata Group to transform Air India into a world-class airline and connect India “non-stop” to every major city in the world, adding its was a testament to the huge economic potential unleashed by privatization of Air India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, termed the Air India-Airbus contract as a “landmark deal” which he said also reflects deepening ties between India and France.

PM Modi and US President Joe Biden also welcomed the landmark agreement between Air India and Boeing as a shining example of mutually beneficial cooperation.
