Peeing incident: Air India CEO directs crew to report every improper behaviour on aircraft

Following global outrage over a passenger peeing on another passenger mid-flight, Chief Executive Campbell Wilson has instructed staff to immediately report any unlawful behaviour on board to authorities, regardless of whether the situation appears to have been resolved.

In an internal email, Wilson stated that even if the crew honestly believe that the situation has been resolved amongst the persons involved, they must report it to authorities at the earliest opportunity if an occurrence on our aircraft includes improper behaviour of such scale.

The affected passenger’s aversion is completely understood, and we share her distress, he continued. Wilson also said that the aircraft crew must also be clear on the standard of behaviour that is anticipated and take firm, decisive, and prompt action against those who do not comply.

When a business class passenger on a trip from New York to Delhi opened their zipper and peed on a fellow passenger, an elderly woman, in November, Air India came under fire, including from the aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Surprisingly, the individual, who has been identified as Shankar Mishra, was let go without consequence when the plane landed. After the woman’s letter to N Chandrasekaran, group chairman of Air India, surfaced this week, Air India finally filed a police report.

The woman described her ordeal, claiming that in addition to not being given a new seat, the crew also forced her to confront the intoxicated man as he apologised and pleaded to avoid jail while he was carried to her seat.

The airline stated there was no additional flare-up or conflict and that because of respecting the presumed wishes of the female passenger, the crew opted not to summon police enforcement upon landing. The airline had previously barred the guy from flying for 30 days after receiving complaints.

The DGCA expressed its strong disapproval of Air India’s activities, calling the airline’s behaviour unprofessional and responsible for systemic failure. It has requested an explanation from representatives of the airline operated by the Tata Group as well as the flight’s pilot and crew.

A intoxicated male passenger allegedly peed on a female passenger’s blanket on a Paris-Delhi aircraft ten days after the event on November 26. Despite the man’s written apologies, nothing was done about the incident, according to news agency PTI on Thursday.
