Allahabad University students protest against 400 per cent fee hike in Lucknow | WATCH
The college administration also claimed that there are vivid instructions from the government that the university needs to generate funds and reduce its dependence on government funds.

Students of Allahabad University carry out a protest march with torches in hand on Thursday in Lucknow. According to reports, the students have been staging protests for the past 15 days after the notification of Allahabad University’s apex decision-making body approved the decision of hiking the fees of various courses on August 31.
The students reasoned their protest by stating that the decision will rob a large number of students from the opportunity of studying in a premier university such as Allahabad University as students coming from a weaker socio-economic background would not be able to cope with the fee hike.
In the proposed fee hike, The annual fees for bachelor of arts and bachelor of commerce was Rs 975 which has risen upto Rs 3,701, per month. Whereas, the annual fees for bachelor of science (BSc) and BSc (medical laboratory technology) has risen to Rs 4,151 and Rs 3,951, respectively. B.tech’s annual fee has also been increased from Rs 1,941 to Rs 5,151.
The protests staged at Allahabad University were carried out by student political party Chhatrasangh Sanyukt Sangharsh Samiti. Initially the movement started as some students from various courses gathered on the campus to protest against the university for the fee hike. Later on, the protesting students also resorted to fasting to seek changes.
The students, while demanding the retraction of the new proposed fee, also demanded the refund of fees charged for hostels and mess, which were not used during the pandemic.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) had instructed all universities and colleges to refund the hostel and mess fees charged during the pandemic at the earliest or adjust it in other fees and has warned of action if the instructions aren’t followed.
The vice-chancellor of Allahabad University, Sangita Srivastava, has reasoned the fee hike by stating that the monthly fees at AU for the past 110 years had been Rs 12. But now In order to pay electricity bills and other maintenance charges, a hike in the fees was much anticipated.
The college administration also claimed that there are vivid instructions from the government that the university needs to generate funds and reduce its dependence on government funds.
Protesting students of the university have expanded that if the university fails to roll back the decision, nearly 50% of the students would be forced to drop out as many students come from lower socio-economic backgrounds who won’t be able to cope with the new fee structure.
