Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Thakur on Tuesday said that he was once put behind bars for hoisting the national flag in Kashmir but asserted that nowadays such restrictions don’t exist in the erstwhile state anymore after the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019.

Thakur, while speaking at the first Y20 meeting under G20 India at IIT Guwahati recalled his march from Kolkata to Kashmir to hoist the tricolor but was jailed for flying the national flag in the Union Territory.

At the time, Anurag Thakur was serving as the BJP Youth Wing President.

He asserted that times are different now in Jammu and Kashmir with no such restrictions anymore as was witnessed during last year’s ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ program when there was a national flag hoisted on “each and every house in Kashmir.”

The minister credited this radical change to the BJP-regime’s repeal of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status under Article 370 in August 2019.
