Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday ordered a magisterial inquiry into the gang-rape of a 9-year-old Dalit girl in the Delhi Cantonment area that triggered mass protests demanding justice.

Kejriwal met the minor’s family in the afternoon and announced a Rs 10 lakh compensation for the kin.

After meeting the bereaved family, Kejriwal tweeted in Hindi: Met the child’s family and shared their pain. The government will provide financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh to the family. There will be a magisterial inquiry into the matter. Big lawyers will be engaged to get the culprits punished. The central government should take strict steps to improve law and order in Delhi, the Delhi government will cooperate fully, Kejriwal wrote.

Kejriwal had been slammed by the protesters as he did not utter a word till 24 hours after the heinous crime. He had tweeted after 24 hours last evening.

A nine-year-old Dalit girl was raped and murdered and her body was forcibly cremated by her four men including a priest in Delhi’s Old Nangal village. The accused identified Radhey Shyam (priest), Kuldeep, Laxmi Narain and Salim have been arrested by the Delhi police and sent to judicial custody. The probe into the case is on. The locals are holding protests against the crime, demanding justice for the nine-year-old.

The minor girl, who belonged to the Dalit community, lived with her parents in Purana Nangal in the Delhi Cantonment area, close to the crematorium. On Sunday, she had gone to the crematorium to fetch some cold water from the water cooler at around 5.30 pm and never returned.

Around 6 pm, the crematorium’s priest, and three others, known to the girl’s mother, called her to the crematorium and showed her daughter’s body claiming that she got electrocuted while getting water from the cooler.

The child’s mother said that there were burn marks on her wrist and elbow and her lips had turned blue, a senior police official told news agency PTI.

The priest and his companions dissuaded the girl’s mother from making a call to police, saying they will register a case and during the post-mortem, doctors will steal the girl’s organs, so it was better to cremate her, the officer said.

The girl was eventually cremated but the child’s parents raised a hue and cry that it was done without their consent. A crowd of 200 villagers gathered there and a PCR call was made from the spot, the police said.

80-year-old dies during police raid at residence of wanted criminal in Jharkhand's Khunti, magisterial inquiry underway

An 80-year-old man died while the police were conducting a raid at the home of a wanted criminal in Jharkhand. The incident happened in Rodo Islampur village of Khunti district at around 12:30 pm on Saturday.

According to the reports, the Torpa police reached the home of the wanted criminal, Izhar Ansari alias Kalu, to nab him. However, Kalu’s father, Mohd Nizamuddin Ansari, died during the raid. The police were on a mission to arrest Kalu, who was accused of selling banned meat.

Reportedly, Torpa police station in-charge Satyajit Kumar along with other officials reached Rodo village to arrest Kalu. When they reached his home, the doors were locked. Initially, the police asked the family to open the door, but when no one opened it for about an hour, they broke it.

The villagers allege that the police barged into the house of Kalu by breaking three doors. Kalu’s wife, children, father and other members were present in the house. The villagers alleged that Kalu’s father suffered a heart attack when he heard the policemen’s voice.

Soon after, the villagers and Kalu’s relatives got furious and created a ruckus. The villagers blamed the police for Kalu’s father’s demise.

A family member said those people came inside and behaved very rudely. She said the police entered the house with a camera and when she asked them not to shoot because there are girls, they said they will blur their picture. She said she requested them not to create chaos because there are two patients in the house.

She claimed that they asked for the license but they didn’t show and entered the house. She stated that they dragged out her grandfather, who was the heart patient and he died on spot. They also used abusive language, she added.

After getting the information, SDO Aniket Sachan, LRDC Jitendra Munda, SDPO, and other officers reached the location at around 2:30 pm and tried to pacify the situation. Khunti SP Aman Kumar said prima facie states police were not involved in the death of a senior citizen.
