India’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL), has said that it will complete its first order of 10 thousand ventilators in collaboration with AgVA Healthcare, an existing approved manufacturer of ventilators, to the Central government by the end of May.  Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) has claimed that it was approached by the government to help them in ventilator manufacture in the fight against COVID-19. The government wanted ventilator in April, May and June. As a result Maruti company collaborated with AgVa, which was a two year old company with very little production capacity. But it had manufactured a ventilator that was approved by the government.

As a result, the MSIL signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the AgVa on March 30 and has produced 1,250 ventilators till date. Now the daily production rate of ventilators is going up steadily and now 250-300 ventilators are being produced on a daily basis, which will soon be scaled up to 400 ventilators per day. The MSIL is supplying ventilators to the government on a regular basis.

While AgVa Healthcare is responsible for the technology, performance and related matters for all the ventilators, the MSIL is using its suppliers to produce the required volume of components and use its experience and knowledge to upgrade systems for the production and quality control of the higher volumes.

Apart from Maruti, carmakers Mahindra Group and Hyundai India have joined hands with other global automobile giants in helping to increase the production of ventilators in the country. India has the world’s fourth-largest auto industry, after China, the US and Japan, and its top three automakers have joined the ventilator market.

Ventilators are expensive and sophisticated breathing aids needed in the treatment of Covid-19, a disease that affects the lungs. Ventilators for critically ill patients include intubation, inserting tubes into the lungs to enable the patient to inhale oxygen. The world faces a critical shortage of ventilators, with about 1.2 million coronavirus infections across 204 countries.

Empowered by its auto industry, India plans to increase output to 50,000 ventilators per month by the end of May, from 5,580 units in March.

Amid ruckus over special status resolution, Jai Shri Ram chants echo in J&K Assembly

The intense protests from BJP members led to multiple interruptions in the proceedings, ultimately prompting the speaker to adjourn the session for the day.

On Wednesday, chants of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ echoed through the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly amid ruckus over the passing of a resolution calling for a dialogue between the Centre and elected representatives regarding the restoration of the erstwhile state’s special status.

The Assembly witnessed chaos after the resolution’s approval, as BJP members surged into the well of the House, tearing copies of the document and directing slogans at the speaker and the National Conference (NC) government.

The intense protests from BJP members led to multiple interruptions in the proceedings, ultimately prompting the speaker to adjourn the session for the day.

As tensions escalated, NC and BJP representatives exchanged sharp remarks while opposition members raised various slogans, including ‘Jai Shri Ram,’ ‘August 5 Zindabad,’ ‘Vande Mataram,’ ‘Anti-national Agenda Nahi Chalega,’ ‘Anti-Jammu Agenda Nahi Chalega,’ ‘Pakistani Agenda Nahin Chalega,’ and ‘Speaker Hai Hai’.

Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Sunil Sharma, accused the speaker of bias, asserting, “Reports indicate that you (the speaker) convened a meeting of ministers yesterday to draft the resolution yourself.”

“We condemn the introduction of the bill by NC-Cong aimed at reinstating Article 370, deeming it unconstitutional and misleading. J&K legislative Assembly is not above the parliament and Supreme Court of India, which upheld the abrogation of Article 370. Abdullah family cannot restore 370 even after taking a thousand generations,” he said, speaking to the media.

Another BJP member, Sham Lal Sharma, claimed that the resolution was prepared in collusion with the speaker in a guest house.

Sharma further argued that the Assembly election mandate supported the abrogation of Article 370, highlighting that the BJP secured 26 per cent of the votes compared to NC’s 23 per cent. He urged the speaker to act independently, accusing him of behaving like an NC leader during the proceedings.

The Assembly approved the resolution by voice vote amidst the uproar from BJP members. The resolution, introduced by J&K Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, sought to restore the special status that was revoked by the Centre on August 5, 2019.

Choudhary’s resolution emphasised the significance of the special status and constitutional guarantees that protected the identity, culture, and rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, expressing concern over their removal.

It urged the Government of India to commence dialogue with elected representatives from Jammu and Kashmir to restore the special status and constitutional protections, while ensuring that any restoration process respects both national unity and the legitimate aspirations of the region’s residents.

The Parliament Winter Session will commence from November 25 and will conclude on December 20. The winter session will take place two days after the announcement of Maharashtra and Jharkhand Assembly election results.

Kiren Rijiju, Parliamentary Affairs Minister affirmed that the government’s proposal to convene both Houses of the Parliament (Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha) during this period was sanctioned by President Droupadi Murmu.

Reportedly, the event will be celebrated in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan in New Delhi, with members of both Houses gathering to honour the country’s foundational document.

Taking to X, Kiren Rijiju said that the President, on the recommendation of Government of India, has approved the proposal for summoning of both the Houses of Parliament for the Winter Session, 2024 from 25th November to 20th December, 2024 (subject to exigencies of parliamentary business). In this session, raging discussions are expected to be held around two key legislative proposals: The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 and One Nation, One Election.

Kerala High Court quashes charges against film director Sreekumar Menon in complaint filed by actor Manju Warrier

In a significant development, the Kerala High Court has quashed all charges against film director Sreekumar Menon in a case filed by renowned South Indian actress Manju Warrier. The criminal case lodged in 2019, alleged stalking and harassment by Sreekumar Menon against Manju Warrier.

Justice S. Manu, who presided over the case, found insufficient evidence to support the charges pressed against the film director. The charges included stalking under Section 354D of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), using obscene language under Section 294(b) of the IPC, and criminal intimidation under Section 509 of the IPC.

The Kerala High Court also noted a significant delay in the actor’s report of the alleged incident involving obscene language. The complaint, which was filed in 2019, mentioned an altercation that supposedly occurred in Dubai in December 2018. Furthermore, the Court pointed out that Section 188 of the CrPC mandates seeking Central Government permission for prosecuting offenses committed outside India.

The final report also included a charge under Section 120(o) of the Kerala Police Act. However, the High Court observed that this offense is non-cognizable, meaning the police cannot initiate a case without specific permission. Since the other charges were deemed unsustainable, the Kerala High Court ruled that prosecution solely under this section would not hold validity.

The case stemmed from a petition filed by Manju Warrier with the Kerala State Police Chief in 2019. The petition alleged stalking and harassment by Sreekumar Menon. Subsequently, the petition led to the registration of an FIR at the Thrissur East Police Station.

Both film director Sreekumar Warrier and actor Manju Menon have enjoyed successful careers in the Malayalam film industry. Their collaboration on the film Odiyan, starring Mohanlal, marked Sreekumar Menon’s directorial debut.
