BJP MLA named in murder FIR after man hacked to death in Bengaluru

A gruesome murder in Bengaluru has sparked political controversy after a BJP legislator was named in an FIR following the killing of a man with a criminal background. The victim, identified as Shivakumar alias Biklu Shiva, was brutally attacked by five unidentified assailants outside his residence near Halasuru Lake.

BJP MLA accused of abetment in murder case

According to police, Shiva was standing outside his home when five men arrived in a car and hacked him with sharp weapons. Despite sustaining fatal injuries, he was left at the scene as the attackers fled. The incident prompted a visit by senior police officials, including Joint Commissioner Ramesh Banoth and DCP D Devaraj.

Following the attack, Shiva’s mother Vijayalakshmi lodged a formal complaint with the police. The FIR registered subsequently includes serious allegations against BJP MLA Byrathi Basavaraj, a former Karnataka minister and current representative from Krishnarajapuram, accusing him of abetting the murder.

Victim had previously warned of threats from MLA and associates

The case has gained further traction as documents reveal that the deceased had previously written to the Bengaluru police commissioner. In the letter sent three months prior to his death, Shiva accused MLA Basavaraj, his aide Jagadish, and the legislator’s nephew Kiran of attempting to forcibly seize his real estate properties in Bengaluru East.

Shiva alleged that the trio, along with their associates, had been coercing him into transferring his property at undervalued rates. He further claimed that Jagadish had multiple cases against him, which were allegedly suppressed due to Basavaraj’s influence.

In the letter, Shiva described sustained threats, extortion, and use of political muscle to silence legal redress. He warned that if anything happened to him, the MLA and his close associates would be directly responsible. The letter concluded with a plea for protection and legal action against the accused.

Legal case previously halted by court order

Police officials confirmed that an FIR had earlier been registered against Jagadish following Shiva’s complaint. However, legal proceedings were put on hold due to a court stay on the case.

The current murder investigation has reignited scrutiny of political interference in land disputes and allegations of misusing political power for personal gain. Authorities have yet to detain any suspects in the murder case, and the probe is ongoing.

Alongside the Bill, the Lok Sabha will also consider a statutory resolution moved by Opposition MPs Sougata Ray, N.K. Premachandran, and Adv. Dean Kuriakose seeking to disapprove the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Ordinance, which was promulgated by the President on May 16, 2026.
