The BJP launched a sharp attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for skipping the swearing-in ceremony of CP Radhakrishnan as India’s 15th Vice President. The oath of office was administered by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari, in a post on X, accused Gandhi of disregarding constitutional values. He alleged that Gandhi hates the Indian Constitution, hates Indian democracy, and boycotts the official swearing-in ceremony of the Vice President.
Bhandari further alleged that Gandhi had also skipped the Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort. He questioned Gandhi’s commitment to public life, arguing that a leader who avoids such occasions and the swearing-in of a constitutional dignitary cannot be considered fit for public responsibility. He also claimed that Gandhi had time to holiday in Malaysia but chose not to attend an official constitutional function, and described him as a danger to India’s democracy who, in his view, opposes the Indian state.
While Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge represented the party at the event, Gandhi was reportedly travelling to Gujarat for a party programme. Defending his absence, Congress leader Udit Raj said there was no rule requiring the Leader of the Opposition to attend every constitutional function. He added that the Congress president’s presence was sufficient and accused the BJP of undermining the Constitution, while portraying Gandhi as fighting to protect it.
Notably, most Opposition leaders had also stayed away from the swearing-in of Jagdeep Dhankhar as Vice President in 2022. Mr. Dhankhar, who resigned recently citing health reasons, was present at today’s event.
Besides BJP, its ally Shiv Sena also criticised Opposition leaders for their absence. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Sena chief Eknath Shinde remarked that the Opposition should not politicise constitutional occasions.
CP Radhakrishnan, who defeated the Opposition nominee and retired Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy by 152 votes on Tuesday, will serve as Vice President until September 11, 2030. He previously held the post of Maharashtra Governor before being named the NDA’s vice-presidential candidate.
