Ruckus between BJP, Congress councillors at Chandigarh civic body meet over BR Ambedkar

A massive chaos broke out at the general meeting of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation as the Congress and the BJP councillors clashed over the legacy of DR BR Ambedkar. Reportedly, Anil Masih, the election officer who tampered with the ballot papers of the Chandigarh mayoral polls, targeted the Congress and accused Rahul Gandhi of being out on bail, citing the National Herald Case.

This led to a heated exchange among Congress, AAP, and BJP members, culminating in a brawl.Subsequently, the Congress and AAP councillors passed a motion against Union Home Minister Amit Shah, calling for his resignation. The BJP councillors countered by accusing the Congress of historically disrespecting Dr BR Ambedkar, especially during the tenure of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

Furthermore, the BJP also alleged that the Congress was attempting to tarnish Amit Shah’s image by selectively quoting his recent speech in the Rajya Sabha. The saffron party also launched an attack on Congress, accusing it of orchestrating a smear campaign against Amit Shah.

Reports said that senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad led the charge, stating that the Congress was engaging in drama and hypocrisy by invoking Dr BR Ambedkar’s legacy for political gain. Addressing a press conference at BJP headquarter, Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the Congress, which always insulted BR Ambedkar during his lifetime, is now pretending to honour him. He added that the hypocrisy must stop. The BJP also demanded an unconditional apology from the Congress for its alleged historical mistreatment of Dr BR Ambedkar.

Responding, the Congress launched a weeklong nationwide initiative titled, Ambedkar Samman Saptah to commemorate Dr Ambedkar’s contributions. The party leaders and workers are holding marches and press conferences to highlight his legacy and demand accountability for Amit Shah’s recent remarks.

Meanwhile, Mayawati, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress were two sides of the same coin, alleging that both of the parties have been engaged in politics in the name of Babasaheb Ambedkar.

Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari is set to become the next Chief Minister of West Bengal after being elected leader of the BJP legislature party during a key meeting in Kolkata on Thursday.

The development comes days after the BJP secured a decisive victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, ending the Trinamool Congress’ long rule in the state. Party leaders met in the presence of senior central leadership to finalise the chief ministerial face ahead of the swearing-in ceremony scheduled for May 9.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah attended the legislature party meeting where Adhikari’s name was formally announced. Reports said the BJP leadership backed him after he emerged as the party’s strongest face in Bengal politics over the past few years.

Adhikari played a major role in the BJP’s campaign across the state and remained one of the party’s most aggressive leaders against the ruling Trinamool Congress. He also defeated former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur during the Assembly elections, strengthening his position within the party.

The BJP’s victory is being viewed as a major political shift in West Bengal, where the party is set to form its first government. Adhikari, once a senior Trinamool Congress leader, had joined the BJP before the 2021 Assembly elections and later became Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly.

Following the announcement, celebrations were reported outside Adhikari’s residence in East Midnapore, with party workers distributing sweets and raising slogans in support of the BJP leader.

The swearing-in ceremony of the new BJP government is expected to take place in Kolkata on May 9, where Adhikari will officially assume charge as the Chief Minister of West Bengal.

BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has emerged as the leading contender for the post of Chief Minister in West Bengal as the party prepares to form its first government in the state following its Assembly election victory.

The BJP legislature party is scheduled to meet in Kolkata to elect its leader, a decision that is expected to formally determine the next Chief Minister. Union Home Minister Amit Shah reached Kolkata ahead of the meeting and is overseeing the selection process.

Sources cited in media reports suggest the new BJP-led government may also appoint two deputy chief ministers, a post that has remained vacant in West Bengal for nearly two decades. One of the deputy CM positions could reportedly go to a woman leader. BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul is among the names being discussed for the role.

Another deputy chief minister could be chosen from north Bengal, with former Union minister Nisith Pramanik being seen as a possible contender, according to reports. There is also speculation that the BJP leadership may consider a representative from the tribal community for a senior cabinet role.

Adhikari, who played a key role in the BJP’s election campaign, defeated Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur during the recently concluded Assembly elections. The BJP secured a two-thirds majority in the 294-member Assembly, paving the way for its first government in West Bengal.

The swearing-in ceremony for the new government is expected to take place on May 9 in Kolkata. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and several senior BJP leaders are expected to attend the event.

Rat poison found in watermelon consumed by Mumbai family, forensic report reveals

A forensic investigation into the deaths of four members of a Mumbai family has found traces of zinc phosphite, a toxic rat poison, in both the victims’ bodies and watermelon samples consumed by them.

Mumbai police are investigating a suspected poisoning case after forensic tests reportedly confirmed that four members of a family died due to consumption of a toxic rodenticide rather than food poisoning.

The victims — Abdullah Dokadia, his wife Nasreen, and their daughters Zainab and Ayesha — had reportedly consumed watermelon at their residence in Mumbai after hosting relatives for dinner. Within hours, all four developed severe vomiting and diarrhoea before dying.

According to forensic findings, traces of zinc phosphite, a chemical commonly used in rat poison, were found in the bodies of the deceased as well as in samples of the watermelon consumed by the family.

Investigators are now examining whether the poisonous substance entered the fruit accidentally or was intentionally introduced. Authorities are also looking into multiple angles, including accidental contamination and possible foul play.

The case had initially been suspected to be one of food poisoning linked to watermelon consumption. Earlier forensic examinations had reportedly found a green tint in some internal organs, which later raised suspicion of poisoning.

Officials had earlier recorded statements from relatives who attended the family dinner and consumed the same meal but did not fall ill.

Experts say zinc phosphite can be extremely dangerous for humans, as it releases toxic phosphine gas after entering the stomach, potentially causing rapid organ failure.
