The Congress on Sunday launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of hypocrisy after the ruling party distanced itself from controversial remarks made by its MPs, Nishikant Dubey and Dinesh Sharma, targeting the Supreme Court and its Chief Justice.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh took to X to criticize the BJP’s response, dismissing outgoing BJP president J.P. Nadda’s clarification as “damage control” that “will fool nobody.”
Ramesh described Dubey and Sharma as “repeat offenders” in delivering hate speech, alleging they are often deployed by the BJP’s top leadership to attack communities, institutions, and individuals. “The distancing of the outgoing BJP President from the atrocious remarks made by two BJP MPs on the Chief Justice of India carries little meaning,” Ramesh stated. “This is Entire Political Science reflecting itself as Entire Political Hypocrisy.”
Ramesh further questioned Nadda’s silence on similar remarks made by a “distinguished appointee” to a high constitutional position, pressing the BJP to clarify whether it endorses such statements.
The row erupted after Dubey, a Lok Sabha MP, made contentious comments in an interview with ANI, questioning the Supreme Court’s 2018 ruling decriminalizing homosexuality under Article 377. “Whether it is Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, Jain, or Sikh, all believe that homosexuality is a crime. One fine morning, the Supreme Court said that we abolish this case,” Dubey said.
He also criticized the court’s interventions in legislative matters, citing issues like the Ram Mandir and Gyanvapi disputes, and accused it of overstepping its role by directing the President and governors on pending bills.
Similarly, Rajya Sabha MP Dinesh Sharma stirred controversy by suggesting that the judiciary cannot challenge the authority of the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, or the President. “No one can direct the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The President has already given her assent to it. No one can challenge the President, as the President is supreme,” Sharma said, referencing the constitutional framework laid out by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
In response, Nadda sought to defuse the situation, stating, “The Bharatiya Janata Party has nothing to do with the statements made by BJP MPs Nishikant Dubey and Dinesh Sharma on the judiciary and the Chief Justice of the country. These are their personal statements, but the BJP neither agrees with nor supports such statements.” He emphasized that the party “completely rejects” the MPs’ remarks.
However, the Congress dismissed Nadda’s statement as inadequate, with Ramesh accusing the BJP of selective outrage and failing to address similar remarks by other party affiliates. The opposition’s sharp rebuke underscores escalating tensions between the two parties, with the judiciary’s role becoming a flashpoint in the ongoing political discourse.
