After the death of three civil service aspirants due to waterlogging in the basement of a coaching centre at Old Rajendra Nagar, students held a protest against MCD and the IAS coaching institute in Delhi.
According to police, the owner and coordinator of the coaching center have been arrested. The arrested coaching centre owner and coordinator have been identified as Abhishek Gupta and Deshpal Singh.
Three students who lost their lives after the basement of the institute was filled with water yesterday were residents of Kerala, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh. The three victims have been identified as Tania Soni, Shreya Yadav, both 25, and Navin Delvin (28).
The deployment of paramilitary forces was called to maintain order amidst student accusations of municipal authorities’ negligence.
The distressing event unfolded at a facility in Rajendra Nagar that accommodates a branch of Rau’s IAS Study Circle, a renowned coaching center for civil service hopefuls. The basement of the building, where the institute’s library is located with only one entrance and exit, became flooded after heavy rainfall yesterday, trapping around 20 students inside.
MCD Supervisor Rishipal said that the work is almost complete. He added, “3-4 inches of water is left. MCD has installed all the machines. The building including the basement is completely empty. No one is trapped. Now there is no tragedy.”
Meanwhile, the blame game started between the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party after the incident that claimed three lives.
Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi has referred to the incident as “extremely shocking” and has emphasised the necessity for a thorough investigation and “immediate and strict action” in response. Furthermore, she has instructed measures against all coaching centers under the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) that are conducting commercial activities in basements in violation of regulations.
Additionally, an investigation has been commissioned to ascertain whether any MCD official is responsible for the Rajendra Nagar occurrence. The BJP has directed criticism towards Delhi Minister Atishi and local MLA Durgesh Pathak.
BJP Chief for Delhi, Virendra Sachdeva, accused Pathak of disregarding repeated pleas by local residents to clean the drains, laying the blame for the mishap on the negligence of the Delhi Government. In response, Pathak challenged the BJP’s allegations by questioning their actions over the past 15 years.
He explained that the area is prone to flooding due to its low-lying characteristic, and mentioned that a damaged drain caused the flooding, while underscoring the teams’ concerted efforts to address the situation.
Furthermore, Pathak stressed that the BJP should also be held accountable for the situation, highlighting the BJP’s 15-year representation in the area and underscoring that addressing drainage issues cannot be accomplished instantaneously, stressing that politics should not interfere in this case.
