Delhi woman stripped, thrashed for helping her 65-year-old landlady

A 45-year-old woman was allegedly stripped and thrashed by her landlady’s family members in south-west Delhi’s Palam when she tried to stop them from attacking the 65-year-old landlady, police said on Friday.

The police said the woman reported Palam police station on Friday and lodged a complaint against several people, including women, for thrashing and tearing her clothes during the fight, PTI reported.

“We have registered an FIR under IPC Sections 354 (molestation) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) against the people involved in the act. We have also procured closed circuit-television (CCTV) footage of the incident to identify the accused. They will be arrested soon,” said a senior police officer.

Landlady thrashed by her son and daughter-in-law

According to a complaint filed by the woman, the victim said that on Wednesday around 11.30 a.m., the landlady’s son and her daughter-in-law were beating up her landlady.  When the woman tried to intervene with a group of people thrashing the landlady, she too was attacked.

“Men and women started thrashing me with belts and rods. When I ran for my life, they chased me and tore my clothes in full public view on the street. No one came to rescue me. After I fell unconscious, they left me. I approached the police after I gained consciousness,” said the victim.

Passers-by recorded videos but did not help me, says the victim

The 45-year-old victim said she was thrashed for nearly an hour, but no one came to her rescue. She said that passers-by stopped to record videos on their mobile phones.  “But no one volunteered to inform the police about the incident,” the woman said.

In the videos circulated on social media, the victim was seen walking with bruises all over her body with her clothes torn. She also alleged that she had approached the police on Wednesday but the local police took action only after the intervention of senior police officers.

Landlady disowned her son after a family dispute

According to police, the landlady had disowned her only son from an ancestral property after a dispute with her daughter-in-law couple of months back.

The son used to visit his mother frequently but the landlady did not allow her daughter-in-law to enter the house, The Hindu reported. The police said that on Wednesday, the daughter-in-law, along with her other relatives, entered the landlady’s house to thrash her.

The police have registered a case in the matter.

Indian High Commission, consulates facing threats, Canada’s allegations politically motivated: MEA

Amidst escalating tension between India and Canada, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi stated that the allegations by Canada seems to be politically motivated, adding that there’s a degree of prejudice. Diplomatic standoff between both the countries broke out after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday claimed that his country’s security agencies were investigating a link between the Indian government and the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Briefing the media regarding the aforesaid allegation, Arindam Bagchi noted that no specific information was shared by Canada on the Nijjar case. He added that the Indian government had shared specific information concerning criminal activities by individuals on Canadian soil but no actions were taken regarding the same.

Arindam Bagchi further underscored that it is Canada that needs to look into its growing reputation of being a safe haven for terrorists, extremists, and organised crime. He asserted that the security situation is owing to the inaction by the Canadian government. He also claimed that there are elements linked to organized crime, terrorists, and extremists who are on a free run and politically condoned.

The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson also claimed that the Indian High Commission and consulates are facing security threats in Canada and therefore cannot process visa applications temporarily.  He noted that all categories of visas are suspended and that the issue is not about travel to India but about incitement of violence and inaction by the Canadian government. Those who have valid visas and OCI cards can travel freely, he continued.

He conveyed that the Indian government has informed the Canadian government that there should be parity in strength and rank equivalence in their mutual diplomatic presence. Notably, in a meeting that was held on the sidelines of the G20 Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed strong concerns about continuing anti-India activities of extremist elements in Canada, promoting secessionism and inciting violence against Indian diplomats, damaging diplomatic premises, and threatening the Indian community in Canada and their places of worship.
