[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to share a 7-minute video enlisting the benefits of demonetisation, BJP leaders sing paeans too

A year after he stunned the nation with his contentious decision of declaring the old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes as no longer legal tender, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his BJP, on Wednesday, claimed that demonetisation had served its intended purpose of fighting and curbing corruption.

While Opposition parties across India observed the first anniversary of demonetisation as a ‘black day’ and listed the negative impact that Modi’s move had on the state of the Indian economy, the Prime Minister, his government and the BJP went all out to project the benefits accrued by note ban.

While his government-issued full-page advertisements in newspapers and sponsored television commercials to list the positive impact of note ban, Modi himself took to Twitter to post a 7-minute-long video detailing the “benefits of demonetisation” even as he claimed that 125 crore Indians had “fought a decisive battle and won”.[/vc_column_text][vc_raw_html]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[/vc_raw_html][vc_raw_html]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[/vc_raw_html][vc_column_text]The Prime Minister tweeted: “I bow to the people of India for steadfastly supporting the several measures taken by the government to eradicate corruption and black money #AntiBlackMoneyDay”. Even as incidents of infiltrations by Pakistani terrorists into India and unrest in the Kashmir Valley continue to make news with an alarming frequency, Union defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman reiterated the advertised claim of the government, on Wednesday, saying: “Biggest achievement (of demonetisation) is that terrorism has been badly hit and the stone pelters which were in thousands have reduced because their cash flow has been cut.”

Union finance minister Arun Jaitley had, on the eve of the demonetisation anniversary, released a long note on Facebook that appeared to be a laundry list of what the government feels was achieved by demonetisation.[/vc_column_text][vc_raw_html]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[/vc_raw_html][vc_column_text]That common Indians, including BJP supporters, are perhaps finding it difficult to swallow Jaitley’s pro-demonetisation argument can be gauged from the fact that while the finance minister’s Facebook page has over 31 lakh followers, his post secured only 144 comments – mostly anti-demonetisation in nature and was shared by just 61 Facebook users. Jaitley had also shared a link to his demonetisation post on Twitter but of his massive 10.2 million followers, only 780 decided to re-tweet his post while a little over 2500 ‘liked’ it.

The BJP’s efforts at portraying demonetisation as a massive success and a move that “broke the back of black money, corruption and terrorism” seemed to be more like a mechanical campaign being run on social networking sites through posts made by BJP leaders. This even as people on the ground recounted the horrors they had to endure in the immediate aftermath of demonetisation – queuing up outside banks and ATMs to deposit or withdraw their own money, losing loved ones who died under mysterious circumstances while standing in these queues or returning home empty handed from banks, etc.[/vc_column_text][vc_raw_html]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[/vc_raw_html][vc_raw_html]JTNDYmxvY2txdW90ZSUyMGNsYXNzJTNEJTIydHdpdHRlci10d2VldCUyMiUyMGRhdGEtbGFuZyUzRCUyMmVuJTIyJTNFJTNDcCUyMGxhbmclM0QlMjJlbiUyMiUyMGRpciUzRCUyMmx0ciUyMiUzRU1hc3NpdmUlMjBjbGVhbnNpbmclMjBvZiUyMEluZGlhJTI2JTIzMzklM0JzJTIwZmluYW5jaWFsJTIwc3lzdGVtLiUyMCUzQ2ElMjBocmVmJTNEJTIyaHR0cHMlM0ElMkYlMkZ0d2l0dGVyLmNvbSUyRmhhc2h0YWclMkZEZU1vV2lucyUzRnNyYyUzRGhhc2glMjZhbXAlM0JyZWZfc3JjJTNEdHdzcmMlMjU1RXRmdyUyMiUzRSUyM0RlTW9XaW5zJTNDJTJGYSUzRSUyMCUzQ2ElMjBocmVmJTNEJTIyaHR0cHMlM0ElMkYlMkZ0LmNvJTJGa1p4TWswT291WCUyMiUzRXBpYy50d2l0dGVyLmNvbSUyRmtaeE1rME9vdVglM0MlMkZhJTNFJTNDJTJGcCUzRSUyNm1kYXNoJTNCJTIwQkpQJTIwJTI4JTQwQkpQNEluZGlhJTI5JTIwJTNDYSUyMGhyZWYlM0QlMjJodHRwcyUzQSUyRiUyRnR3aXR0ZXIuY29tJTJGQkpQNEluZGlhJTJGc3RhdHVzJTJGOTI3Nzk3NDUyMTkwNTE5Mjk2JTNGcmVmX3NyYyUzRHR3c3JjJTI1NUV0ZnclMjIlM0VOb3ZlbWJlciUyMDclMkMlMjAyMDE3JTNDJTJGYSUzRSUzQyUyRmJsb2NrcXVvdGUlM0UlMEElM0NzY3JpcHQlMjBhc3luYyUyMHNyYyUzRCUyMmh0dHBzJTNBJTJGJTJGcGxhdGZvcm0udHdpdHRlci5jb20lMkZ3aWRnZXRzLmpzJTIyJTIwY2hhcnNldCUzRCUyMnV0Zi04JTIyJTNFJTNDJTJGc2NyaXB0JTNF[/vc_raw_html][vc_raw_html]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[/vc_raw_html][vc_raw_html]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[/vc_raw_html][vc_column_text]Perhaps, Abhishek Banerjee says will not bow to BJP after nearly 11 hours of ED questioning

After spending nearly 11 hours before the Enforcement Directorate, TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee said he would not bow to the BJP and accused the ruling party of using investigative agencies for political purposes.

Trinamool Congress leader and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee on Tuesday said he would not bow to the BJP after spending nearly 11 hours being questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with an ongoing investigation.

Speaking after the questioning, Banerjee alleged that central agencies were being used to target opposition leaders and asserted that he would continue his political fight despite what he described as sustained pressure.

The TMC leader has repeatedly maintained that investigations involving him are politically motivated, a charge he has made on several previous occasions while appearing before central agencies.

His appearance before the ED comes amid a period of heightened political activity and multiple investigations involving leaders in West Bengal. Recent days have also seen Banerjee face summons and questioning in separate matters by state investigative agencies.

After leaving the ED office, Banerjee reiterated that he would not be intimidated and said he remained committed to his political responsibilities. He also accused the BJP of attempting to weaken opposition parties through investigative action, an allegation that the BJP has rejected in the past.

The Enforcement Directorate has not publicly commented on Banerjee’s remarks. The investigation related to the questioning remains ongoing.

DMK attacks Rahul Gandhi, accuses him of weakening opposition unity

DMK has intensified its criticism of Rahul Gandhi, alleging that the Congress leader’s actions have weakened opposition unity and strained relations within the INDIA bloc.

The war of words between the DMK and Congress has intensified, with the DMK launching a strong attack on Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and accusing him of contributing to divisions within the opposition alliance. The criticism comes amid strained ties between the two parties following their political split in Tamil Nadu.

According to the DMK, Rahul Gandhi’s political approach has weakened unity among opposition parties. The party’s IT wing mocked the Congress leader on social media, while an editorial published in the DMK’s official mouthpiece Murasoli questioned his recent remarks on opposition solidarity.

DMK questions Rahul Gandhi’s remarks on opposition unity

In its editorial, Murasoli argued that Rahul Gandhi was speaking about opposition unity despite, according to the DMK, contributing to disagreements among alliance partners in several states. The publication cited criticism directed at Congress by various opposition parties and suggested that the party’s actions had often created tensions within the INDIA bloc.

The editorial also referred to past political disputes involving Congress and Left parties, particularly in Kerala, claiming such episodes had raised concerns among opposition allies about Congress’s approach toward its partners.

Tamil Nadu political fallout adds to tensions

The attack comes after a major political realignment in Tamil Nadu. Following the 2026 Assembly elections, Congress ended its alliance with the DMK and joined the government led by Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The move left the DMK in the opposition and significantly altered the political equation between the two former allies.

The DMK has alleged that Congress benefited from the alliance during the election and later abandoned its partner. The party’s editorial questioned whether assurances from Congress leadership would be trusted by alliance partners after the developments in Tamil Nadu.

Congress rejects allegations

Congress has not issued a detailed official response to the editorial, but party sources have rejected the allegations. According to the party, its decisions in Tamil Nadu were made in line with the mandate delivered by voters and were not intended to undermine either the DMK or the broader opposition alliance.

The latest exchange highlights growing strains between two key opposition parties even as leaders continue to stress cooperation on national issues. Just days earlier, Rahul Gandhi had said that the DMK remained aligned with the opposition on defending the “idea of India” despite political differences.
