On Thursday, cloudbursts in Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla, Mandi, and Kullu districts caused severe disruptions, leaving approximately 50 people missing, with two bodies recovered so far.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has responded by issuing a red alert in Kangra, Kullu, and Mandi, and a flash flood warning for the six districts including Shimla, Chamba, and Sirmaur. The IMD forecasts more rainfall on Friday and has cautioned that flash floods may occur due to the continuing weather conditions.
Chief Secretary Onkar Chand Sharma has indicated that heavy rain alerts will remain in effect until August 2, with further updates to be provided based on IMD data.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu mentioned that the Union Home Minister has pledged assistance, including the deployment of two more teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to strengthen the response efforts. BJP Chief J.P. Nadda and senior Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi are closely monitoring the situation and expressing serious concern.
The crisis at the top level is being monitored by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ensuring that top officials mobilise all available resources to assist those affected.
In response to the emergency, a significant team of the Indian Army, consisting of 125 personnel, an Engineer Task Force, and a Medical Team of 20, has been deployed to aid in rescue operations in the Shimla district.
Heavy rainfall has pounded Himachal Pradesh since Wednesday evening, with Palampur recording the highest rainfall of 212 mm in the region. Other areas affected include Chauri at 203 mm, Dharamshala at 183.2 mm, Jogindernagar at 161 mm, Kangra at 150 mm, Shimla at 64.6 mm, and Sainj at 61 mm. Torrential rains have caused significant destruction and have hampered the rescue operations.
The India Meteorological Department has predicted that the country is likely to receive above-average rainfall during the months of August and September. Additionally, there is a strong possibility that quite favorable La Nina conditions may develop by the end of August.
