Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Wednesday collapsed during the Golden Jubilee celebrations at Kumaon University in Nainital.
After delivering his address and stepping off the stage, Dhankhar approached Mahendra Singh Pal, a former parliamentary colleague seated among the audience. Pal, a High Court advocate in Uttarakhand, had served as a Lok Sabha MP in 1989 alongside Dhankhar, who represented Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan at the time.
The reunion visibly moved both men. They spoke briefly before Dhankhar, embracing Pal, suddenly lost consciousness on his shoulder. The Vice-President’s medical team swiftly intervened, reviving him promptly.
Dhankhar quickly regained composure and continued to Raj Bhawan, where he was scheduled to stay overnight.
His three-day visit to Nainital commenced on Wednesday, 25 June 2025.
Dhankhar, attending Kumaon University’s 50th-anniversary celebrations in Nainital as chief guest on Wednesday, 25 June 2025, suffered a sudden health scare shortly after the event concluded, according to reports.
Earlier that day, Governor Lt Gen Gurmit Singh (retd) welcomed Dhankhar at the Haldwani Army Helipad upon his arrival for a three-day visit. During the Golden Jubilee ceremony, Dhankhar delivered a 45-minute speech, frequently mentioning Dr Mahendra Singh Pal, a former MP who served alongside him in the Lok Sabha in 1989.
After his address, Dhankhar stepped down from the stage and warmly embraced Pal. The two engaged in a heartfelt five-minute conversation, reminiscing about their shared past. Both became visibly emotional, with Pal shedding tears, followed by Dhankhar. During this emotional exchange, Dhankhar suddenly collapsed while still in Pal’s arms.
A team of on-site doctors quickly provided initial medical care, stabilising him. He was then escorted to Raj Bhavan with Governor Gurmit Singh. Medical professionals later confirmed that Dhankhar’s condition was stable.
Prior to the event, dignitaries including Cabinet Minister Rekha Arya (representing the Chief Minister), MP Ajay Bhatt, Haldwani Mayor Gajraj Bisht, Vice Chairman of the Forest and Environment Advisory Committee Deepak Mehra, Kumaon Commissioner Deepak Rawat, IG Riddhim Aggarwal, District Magistrate Vandana, and SSP Prahlad Narayan Meena warmly greeted the Vice-President.
