Police on Saturday said that three men, including a juvenile have been arrested for reportedly harassing and groping a Japanese woman in Delhi on Holi.
An official said that the 22-year-old Japanese tourist was staying Delhi’s Paharganj area and the three accused, one of whom belongs to same area, were identified with the help of local intelligence.
Three people have been detained in connection with the harassment and manhandling of a woman from Japan in Delhi on Holi, the police said today.
A video of the incident went viral on social media, sparking outrage among users and demanding action against the accused. The young Japanese vlogger is seen being groped by a group of men while they smash an egg on her head and forcibly smear her with colours during Holi celebrations in an unspecified part of the country.
The viral clip shows the Japanese woman wearing a white salwar kameez, being shoved and groped by the men while they smear her face and body with colours, seemingly against her will, even as she tries to break free.
In the video, purportedly taken on Wednesday during Holi celebrations in some unspecified of national capital New Delhi, the Japanese girl is repeatedly heard saying “Bye Bye Bye” as she tries to break free from the unruly group of men amid chants of “Holi Hai, Holi Hai.”
However, the men persist and one of them grabs her by the waist as others move in and smear her body with colour. One of the boys even smashes an egg on her head. Towards the end of the disturbing clip, the young woman is seen slapping one of the men as she manages get away.
The disturbing video has sparked outrage among users on social media demanding action against the men for the disgusting act which defames India and its culture.
A user wrote: “Shame on these goons! Horrible horrible treatment of our guests! Apologies won’t do! These goons need to be arrested.”
According to a police statement, the Japanese girl has tweeted that she left the country for Bangladesh yesterday and is mentally and physically fit. However, she hasn’t filed a complaint so far and the police took action based on the video.
The statement said that the police is in touch with the Japan Embassy and further investigation is underway.
