Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), along with the Ministry of Education (MoE) has appointed Santishree Shulipudi Pandit as the first woman Vice-Chancellor on Monday, February 7, 2022.

A senior MoE official said that President Ram Nath Kovind has approved the appointment of Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit as JNU Vice-Chancellor. The official also said that her appointment is for a period of five years.

Her appointment as JNU Vice-Chancellor is being highly slammed due to her previous tweets criticising farmer protests and justifying Mahatma Gandhi’s killing. Following this, her account was disabled.

One of her tweets refers to Indian Christians as rice bag converts. Saket Gokhale, a Trinamool Congress leader, pointed this out on his official Twitter handle. He pointed out that such a person will now be the head of one of India’s elite liberal arts universities. He also asked the Education Minister to clarify if that is how Christian students at JNU will be treated and if this is the Indian policy.

It is also being said that it is very disturbing to see someone who used the vile slur Rice Bag Convert for Indian Christians is now heading the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Another one of the new JNU VC’s tweets that justified Gandhi’s assassination by Nathuram Godse was also widely criticised.

Various tweets called her a role model of scholarship for JNU’s students and faculty.

Journalists also called her out, as well as the government and its supporters by asking if they can just cut the pretence that they voted for development. Tweets implied that civilians who voted for the present regime made their choice because of the communal rot festering within them.

Dr Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit is an alumna of JNU. She pursued her MPhil and PhD in International relations from the esteemed university.
